I don't know how many of you check in on Brian's American Bushman blog, but I stop in and read it daily. I know there are lots of handy folks here, and I see that he is running a Firesteel Contest for you to make up your own and submit photos.

Just curious if anyone here is checked this out, is going to do it, or already submitted an entry?

Best of all, you get the chance to win a free custom sheath ;) Can't beat that.

I would love to enter, but where do I send my pics (that I just took) to?? I have never participated in a blog before so am a bit lost.

Here are my pics any ways (might as well post them somewhere):
this is how I carry it every day! (Crawford Survival Staff):

Can't have fire without tinder either (also kept in the staff):

Hope I can figure out where to send them to enter the contest before it is too late!

That is a cool setup.

I chat with Brian quite a bit, so I never noticed that an e-mail was not listed.

Send your pics to americanbushman at gmail dot com.

dude, a little modification and that would be a HELL of a snake stick, can you tell me some specifics on that thang? Nice job!!!

Hey Cuts Like, I can either snag them from here or you can email them to me at the address here and I'll get them posted to the gallery.

The contest runs until the end of April and, as Brian mentioned, the prize is a full custom leather sheath from the guys at JRE Industries on my dime.

I'm happy to include new projects and old ones (for those of you who've already made some custom firesteels.)

Let me know if you've got any additional questions.

Thanks,

B

Joezilla- it is 4 parts, 5'3" tall, 3/4" thick and the hook is ~3 1/2". I often thought about it as a snake stick, but being up here there really isn't much of a use. Could you expand on what is needed? I do get strange looks with it, but that makes it a good conversation starter. Even weirder looks when I show the steel (too bad I threaded it crooked but it still works), and the tinder within! As far as I know it is the only shepherds hook that Pat and Wes have ever made. I love it- and have carried it constantly since breaking my legs- even had it on the back of my wheelchair. It really helped me survive at least mentally for the past year and a half- made it easier to get things out of cupboards, pick up things when they fell on the floor.....

Brian T- If you could pick them up off of this thread it would be easier- we have had some issues with pictures not appearing on some e-mails recently. If you need anything else (real name, contact info, etc.) send me a PM or email.

Sorry for the hijack!

Awesome! I'm in, Assuming I can find a day off between now and then! Cool Contest, thanks to Brian A for posting the heads up and thanks to Brian T for the contest.

I'll get 'em right now. When I put them in the gallery I'll just use your username (or CLaK maybe.) I won't need your contact info until/unless you win. :)

Thanks,

B

I haven't submitted these, but these are a few I made recently out of blacktail deer horns I found. Sorry about the photo quality, they were taken with my phone...
This one I hand made a bubinga wood dowel to secure the steel in place. It is rock solid.

Here are a couple I made last year.

I have one more that matches an orange G-10 handled knife I made but I don't have a pic of it.

I'll have to see if I can get these on his blog. Thanks for sharing.

Here's one I made earlier...

Ever been stuck in the dark, trying to do everything by flashlight? Holding that flashlight between your teeth while trying to light the all important fire isn't very convenient, especially when that cold metal in your mouth makes you drool all over the tinder...

Now you don't have to, with Foxy's Illuminating Firesteel (da-dah!)

The light is powered from a lithium CR123 cell with a ten year shelf life and good cold-weather performance. Light is about 44 candle-power from the white Nichia LED's.
