Hey guys,
Since there a lot of guys/gals overhere using firesteels in all sizes and brands, I was wondering if you're experiencing the same issues as me.
Recently I had some issues with hard firesteels. And I mean harder in material, so it's more difficult to get thick/good sparks.
I've used several scrapers (thanks Normark for the tips!) but from a certain batch of firesteels (I got from e-bay. size: 6,35x63,50mm) I just can't get enough thick fat sparks. My original Swedish firesteel and the ones from ferrocerium.com are sparking fantastic with all kinds of scrapers.
I also noticed that my hacksaw scapers get dull faster on the harder firesteels(logically).
Do you experience the same, and what do you do to prevent it?
I ussually have my Vic Ranger with me, so I can make a sharp edge with the file in no-time on my scraper.
I also noticed that hardened steels work best used as scraper. I even use Sandvik Coromant scrapers (exspensive!!) and they work the best on all firesteels.
What are your experiences with various firesteels/brands?
Thanks
CZ
