I began playing with firesteels with the kids and I'm looking for good rods to give them and for me too. I have a Ultimate survival strike force, a RAT firesteel (Thanks Derrick for your giveaway), and all types of light my fire. I found that the Ultimate survival and the RAT firesteel are the best but they are expensive.

looking for misch metal ones I came across these for KSF, I was looking for input on these or recommendations, I'm looking for the same type, just a rod, nothing fancy.

I personally like the ones with the hole in the end. They allow you to put a lanyard on them and get a good grip.

Check out Storl's stuff. Great quality - good price.

I have used a drill and a hacksaw on my firesteels - there is nothing to fear. Go slow to avoid sparks.

Have you tried to drill one of those rods to make a hole?

It's easy enough. You just need to make sure you don't have a pile of flammable stuff lying around your drill and it would be fine. I have a drill press and can do it for another buck or so if you need it.

I think many people really over think this. Just keep the flammables away and go to it.

I think drilling and cutting them is fun. I should have made a video of when I took a power saw to cut a 12" rod in half when I was out of stock on 6" rods. It was quite bright. :)

I bet that was a good show. I used my belt sander to round the edges on two of my 3/16" thick fire steels and it threw a ton of sparks. :D

By the way, I've been using the Going Geaf fire steels with great luck.

Going Geaf Firesteels love that name sounds so reassuring :)

Sure you meant going gear, by the way what sizes seems the best the size choice is huge at going gear

Bobcat (1/4" x 3") and Badget (3/8" x 4") are my most popular sizes by dollar mount. Mouse is most popular by quantity, probably since they are the cheapest. A couple of huge wholesale orders also made them seem a lot more popular than they really are.

I personally use the Badger size. I think it's the best compromise of size, weight, and usability.

Got some fat firesteel rods recently to get myself (and a few of my friends) ready for summer adventures. They have some selection of different sizes at Goinggear.

a few pics to get the idea ...ruler shows centimetres not inches :)

Those are pretty slick handles. Did you epoxy them in there or did you thread the rods?
