Firesteels

All handles are glued to ferrorods. I have carried small one with stainless tube glued for quite some time and it stayed together ...I guess the fat one will too.

Half way through this thread I realized I had 3 ferro rods in my bag and I just now finished drilling them. The first I managed without any spark at all the second one sparked and caught some shavings but they went out causing no problem. I cleared away all wood first and had them clamped in a drill press vise. After the spark up I used a couple drops of cutting oil, no more sparks.

Storl, I put in an order yesterday for a few badgers and "mice" ;)

Looking forward to trying your product out. I've been a basic LMF user to date, but judging on your video your steels through off some serious sparks.

Last night I made a new fire kit around a Going Gear Mouse fire steel (1/8"x2") that I've used before to start a few fires.

My kit includes:

1. Mouse Fire steel
1. Candle
1. 1/8oz bottle of lighter fluid
1. small bag dryer lint
2. Cotton pads
1. Mini Bic Lighter
5. toilet paper Squares

Here's a picture of everything:

A larger fire steel would be better if I needed to start a fire while cold or stressed so I might add a Ferret Firesteel (3/16"x3) or something thicker to my kit in the near future. :)

It's easy enough. You just need to make sure you don't have a pile of flammable stuff lying around your drill and it would be fine. I have a drill press and can do it for another buck or so if you need it.

That's good to know. Right now I have a handful of them I got from you after having a friend at Penguin Pawn order them for me. They work great. I will try to drill them, outside.

Do you know if the one that sparked while drilling works better? Maybe a different mix or change in bit.

I have never heard of any of mine performing differently from others, so I'm guessing he used different pressure, speed, or just had a combination of the right factors that made one spark and one not.

I personally like the ones with the hole in the end. They allow you to put a lanyard on them and get a good grip.

+1

I scored one without a hole in a give away put on by Sharp Eye. I decided it would be fun to drill it myself on my little bench drill press. Started with a small pilot hole, went nice and slow made it thru and on the way back up just about tip out it started to spark and caught all the shavings on fire!! Was quite a fun little show. The large hole was great as well, one constant fireball and it threw sparks everywhere.

FWIW check out goingear like most have suggested, he has some great vids of the mischmetal being used.

Both KSF & GG are great folks to deal with.:thumbup:

No, it's more like what Storl suggested, it was the second one I drilled and I may have gotten a bit more aggresive, I didn't change the speed. It might be a good idea to clean up the shavings as you drill.

I have more trouble with the small rods like the Scout. I like the 3/8 by 5". It may be over kill but can I start a fire standing up. They throw a shower of sparks.
