To the OP...
I would say yes, it is absolutely worth your time to be willing to get a separate scraper (striker). You may not need to, if you buy the right set to begin with, firesteel.com sells a set with the Super Striker (which is really a scraper).
I can confirm, that the Going Gear Super Striker (scraper) is very good. I have been trying different scrapers for years now... LMF has had like three versions, hacksaw blades, carbide sharpeners as scrapers, some other now discarded scrapers and now the Super Striker(scraper). I have 3 of them, give them away, and will be sending a couple down Oz way to a friend. They are totally worth it. Absolutely Period
dttomcat and Dnalsi - I have it on good authority, that the rods that are being sold as 'misch metal' contain a larger amount of 'misch metal' and that this is bore out by their characteristic 'energetic' "sparks". I will be able to confirm or deny this fairly soon, as I will be ordering one from Going Gear, specifically to investigate this. I have no doubt I will confirm, not deny.
Best,
Marion

Going Gear makes a little striker (Super Striker) that sells for ~$2 which looks better than the LMF striker. -DT

Not sure I understand the question. I think that mischmetal is a component of ferrocerium which is what all firesteels are made from. I am sure that some are probably better than others. Someone please correct me if I am wrong here. I am by no means a firesteel expert. -DT

I would agree with dttomcat.
Here are a couple links that you can explore around on and learn more than you ever wanted to know![]()
I suspect this jxmetals company is the "source" for many firesteels, so I wonder if there is really much difference. ?
I got mine from firesteel.com and Ron was very good to deal with
