First aid kit?

one of my teachers relatives died becuase of this. They thought he was ok cause he was still sweating and did not rush for help. He died. So its important to know. :(

Coban is great stuff it sticks to itself and nothing else, even when wet. I also carry an asherman chest seal, sterile 4x4s, trauma dressings, snake bite kit. iodine preps, alcohol swabs. one handed tourn., EMS shears, hemostats(dont use em very much, but when you need em- you REALLY need em), Benadryl, activated charcoal, oral glucose tube, asa, tape,
And sometimes an I.V. start kit depending on how far into the bush we are going. Also some Quickclot.

The most important item in a kit is the ability to know how to use it, and be able to get to it quickly.

No problem, what do you guys think about packing an ace bandage too? I cant decide if its worth it or not.

what type of ace bandage? if you mean the type that supports a joint.(http://www.bd.com/elastics/displayProduct.asp?path=0&bid=8&lid=0&tid=0&pid=26 ) If you know you have a joint problem going out i would bring one that fits you. yes its worth it. And there light any way

if you mean this stuff http://www.bd.com/elastics/displayProduct.asp?path=0&bid=8&lid=0&tid=0&pid=1

Yes and no you can use triangle bandages and cloth and qauze to do the same thing. If you hurt your self broken bone or sprained joint, you are much better off making a cast out of tape to support the joint, if that does not work use splints to farther support your self.

Knowing how to use tape can get you through a lot, if your in highschool/collage head over to the trainers room were they "fix" all the athletes. Notice how they use a layer of gauze at the bottom, so the tape does not pull the hair away. Then they use cloth tape to support the joint. Making a semi hard soft cast. Works very well. You have to wrap it a lot and in a supporting way but it makes a cast that is not going anywere fast. But if you need to wrap it only for a short time, then yeah bring at least one roll. I know i have one with lots of cloth tape.

Edit

this topic got me searching for premade kits that are good. So far i have found these guys http://www.wildernessmedical.com/details.ASP?KitNr=2
Thats a nice weekend- week kit. There is a lot of good stuff, and very little "crap" is thrown in to up the item count. Cost wise well to be honest does not look that bad. Some of those bandages are expensive. I would still rather make my own, but using a list like theres will get you started in the right direction

some good stats here http://www.mountainzone.com/gear/First_Aid_kits_Review.html and covers some of the basics!

Yeah, I figure joint immobilization is the way to go. W/ the coban, gauze, tape, I think I can make due w/o an ace bandage

Thanks for all the good advice fellas.

I confess my first aid knowledge is zero. I was thinking of putting something together for the most common type of problems that might arise, like:

Fever/colds/flu
Heatstroke/dehydration
Gyppo guts
Blisters
Cuts
Food poisoning
Allergies

That sort of thing. Beyond that I would have to resort to emergency evacuation. I would have to take a course, or get a book to advance beyond the basics stage.

I guess I can find a container, take my list to the pharmacy and that would be a start.

I got a good start using "Wilderness Medicine" as a guide.

It has a great segregated/modular approach to kit contents, and stresses multifunctionality of components to keep bulk/weight down.

Give it a look.
