Hey guys I was just thinking since we pack around pointy sharp objects all of the time, there might be a few interesting stories about first aid kits, and how you have used yours and or what yours includes just in case.

Do you always pack a small kit with you or near you?

What would your BOB first aid kit contain?

Tell me your epic stories about how you used your kit and tell us, did it have what you needed or did you make do?

What are the first aid kit essentials?

POST PICS if you have some

I really only have one first aid story, which was when I cut my thumb open while camping, I was being a tard and wasn't paying attention and managed to cut the side of my thumb about a third of the way through, into the nail and everything /shudders. I applied pressure immediately, and since we were car camping I had the bf run to my vehicle and get my small first aid kit so I could wrap my thumb up. It didn't bleed imminently, but after a minute blood started seeping out of the wound even though I was putting as much pressure on it as I could stand, it was a pretty clean cut so we just wrapped a couple band aids around it and since I didn't bring any medical tape /facepalm I wrapped the band aids in duct tape. I freaked my friends out pretty bad, they wanted to leave so I could go to the doctor, so I made a deal that if it bled so much it leaked out of the duct tape then we would leave, but I was NOT cutting my camping trip short if I could avoid it!! So everything turned out to be fine when I got home I cleaned it out with alcohol, OUCH and then super glued it shut for a couple weeks (i picked it off several times because I am fidgety like that) and it healed up fine, it took a couple months before I gained feeling back right around my scar, I don't think my nerves lined up so well :/

I will have to acquire some photos of my stuff later, my camera phone is just horrible and I am not going to be home for a day or two.

Adventure Medical Kits - Ultralight/Watertight .5, google the name, they have a great website. I keep it in my car...I find these to be the best "pre-packed" kits you can get...

I pack electrical tape, a cotton bandanna, and duck tape. If I ever get an injury where those wouldn't hold me over until I can get proper medical attention then something really bad has happened.

Ok I also have a couple band-aids for small cuts, antibacterial ointment, and motrin (anti-inflammatory brings down swelling), and maybe a couple alcohol wipes.

If I should break a bone, there are splints all over in the woods. And who doesn't carry some kind of cordage with them? With only these minimum items I'm confident with what I've got.

I have a couple kits from REI. I don't really know whats in them

I really should know more about the contents though, one of those kits could safe my life...

Krazy Glue in brush applicator bottle, QR powder packets (like quick clot but smalleramount), Steri strips, benzocaine wipes, Small non stick pads, adhesive bandages, adhesive bandage tape. That's the basic cut kit.

First aid kit? I thought you were supposed to wrap a snotty bandanna around any injury and move on. :D
Seriously, I buy the $10 to $15 kits at places like Academy Sports and then supplement them. I'll see if I can get a pic of one this weekend.

You're manlier than me or somethin.... cause there is no way I'd want to resort to that!

He's really not, I assure you.:D:thumbup:

My FAK is homemade, with some store bought stuffs that I keep around the house. Big bandages, and the usual assortment. The stuff that I am needing to replenish, is my Qwik Clot, heavy bandages, and suture kits.

Other than that, just a standard FAK.

I don't have time to bleed.

But just in case, I do carry a FAK with plenty of moleskin, bandages, tape, aspirin, scissors, tweezers, tick puller, alky swabs, water treatment, bug spray, poncho, fatwood/tinder, whistle, lighter, SAK Farmer, etc for when I get an ouchy :(

Got this bag in MEC up in the great white north, whilst on a Fenian Raid into Ontario, and filled it with stuff - including a small Adventure Medical Kit from a store called Canadian Tire, which sold much more than just tires, I've learned. :)

Here's a glamour shot with the workhorse to give an idea of size:

I carry a watertight plastic bin about the size of a small Pelican camera case. It's got neosporin, band aids gauze, advil (I hate headaches), Zantac (nothing worse than a sour stomach in the brush) and finger nail clippers (good for a random bunch of things). If I'm away for a few days, I ALWAYS carry caladryl because chiggers eat me alive. No really exciting stories, typical scrapes, cuts from briars, machetes, and shovels. I've had bullets fly over my head during hunting season and had hunters on several occasions be rather upset that we were spoiling their hunt. Oh, and I've had a couple of tangles with wild hogs. Nothing too exciting though.

Good thread. I should have done this one. I'll say for sure my kit has, a big ole maxi pad in it and a tampon on top of the standard band aid, gloves. Roller gauze. One of my kits has celox in it. Pics later.

maxi pad story time:

So when I was in 4-h I raised pigs. One day we were trying to herd a particularly stubborn pig into the trailer, which is all fine and dandy, of course I was bare feet and in shorts... We used hog panels to make a funnel into the trailer and I was in charge of the panels on one side. Well Dan(the pig) decides he is done with these shenanigans and decides he's going to plow through my side between the panel and the gate where I'm standing, and manages to do so, and the panel gouges into my leg and he drags it down my leg making a very nice cut about a foot long down my calf. It wasn't terribly deep but it burned. So I stuck my leg in the river to make it feel better since it was ice cold and walked up to the house to bandage it up since I was getting blood everywhere. We didn't have gauze so I used an ace bandage and a couple maxi pads to wrap it up and carried on with my business.

I used to be. :p

Back when I did construction labor and then even later, carpentery, I didn't worry too much about cuts or pokes aside from keeping my tetanus shot current. Couple of stories...

Once I was loading concrete debris into a front end loader. Just sort of minding my business and getting into the groove. I look down at one point, and my leather glove had filled up with blood at the wrist. Direct pressure and a bandanna on that one.

Another time, I was pulling up tongue and groove flooring in a bathroom. Pry bar slipped and I snagged my wrist on a nail. Much blood. So I go outside to wash it off, and all we had was ice water in a cooler. I pour ice water across the cut and... wake up a little while later with a steel belted radial in my face. The ice water hit some sort of "drop you like a rock" nerve and I went out. After I regained my senses, what do you think I used? Direct pressure and a bandanna. :D

Holy moo cow! crazy stuff! I've never passed out before, almost did once but I imagine its pretty trippy

Oh crap, I forgot my sunglasses. Now the sun is my eyes and I have a hangnail. My day is shot.

LOL. I know it sounds silly but the sunglasses thing truly would be upsetting for me, I get really bad head aches from the sun. I'm a pansy :(

I take sunglasses all the time cause I have the same problem. And I really hate hangnails.

Keep the great info coming, folks. I'm in the process of putting together my first ever proper BOB kit and FAK recommendations are really appreciated.
I already know that there must be a few tubes of superglue included. After all, sealing wounds is what superglue was designed for! Right now my FAK consists of hoping nothing bad happens, which has actually worked out pretty well so far. Time for a little insurance, sez me.
