First Aid Kits - tell me about yours

what i would do is go buy a first aid kit, open it up and what you feel it lacks go and buy that to go with the first aid kit ya bought.

i always buy extra butterfly strips.
burn cream
isreali bandages
benadryl
advil
if you go outdoors alot get some poison ivy medicine, snake bite kit and non latex gloves.

just add to one otherwise it will be endless of what you could make as a first aid kid

I'm a former medic and Ive got some pretty extensive gear at home. With that said all I carry in the woods is: Aspirin, benadryl, duct tape, gauze pad and some standard sized bandaids.

Off the top of my head, I have the following spread out amongst my kit, bag, pockets, etc...

8x 4" gauze pads
10x 2" gauze pads
8x credit card sized cloth band-aid type bandages (they can be cut down to smaller sizes if need be)
4x large cloth bandages
4x finger sized cloth bandages
2x 31"x31"x54" triangle bandages
And several assorted regular band-aids

2x packs of Goodies fast acting aspirin powder
16x ibuprofen

10x alcohol prep pads (useful as tinder as well as wound cleaning)
30 meters of 97lb test spectra thread
8 needles of various sizes
3 foot of gorilla tape
1 suture kit
1 regular sized hemostat
1 regular sized surgical scissors
1 rubber tourniquet (non-tube type, want to replace with rubber tubing)
4 packets 3 in 1 antibiotic ointment
2 packets burn gel

Small sized tick tweezers
And a large 3'x3' cotton bandanna with cool skulls all over it.

I think that is it, but I know I forgot a few things. Most of it is either in an altoids tin or a very small ziplock baggie in the pack. Pics at some point this weekend probably.

Alright, things I need to add: Benadryl, burn cream, poison ivy meds, snake bite kit and duct tape.

Good thread, indeed :)

I am a father with two very out going boys and need to be prepped for almost anything. So here is my list of edc Medical supplies.

1 tube of burn cream
1 tube of antibiotic ointment
1 tube of burn gel
2 tubes of superglue
1 tube of Benadryl
1 Bottle of Advil Liqui-gells
1 Box of Zantac
1 Package of Imodium A-D
1 box of BC fast acting aspirin powder
4 8x 4" gauze pads
4 10x 2" gauze pads
1 large stomach bandage
1 Box of finger bandages
1 Box of assorted cloth band-aids
4 Maxi Pads (great for bleeders)
40 alcohol prep pads
1 roll of gorilla tape
1 regular sized surgical scissors
1 tube type tourniquet
1 Small tweezers
1 finger nail clipper
1 Snake Bite kit (I do live in Florida)

I need to be able to do something fast if anything happens to the boys. Sorry I don't have any interesting stories to share but I am always extra careful. :D

Honestly, duct tape is my #1 first aid item. I have used it to close some pretty nasty cuts long enough for me to get home. Pain meds, gauze, and neosporin finish it off for me.

Minimal i know.

Right now all i've got is some bandaids, duct tape and super glue. I really should put together a good first aid kid.

If I was going to make one I'd throw in some celox granules and one of those celox applicators for deep penetration wounds.

man, geez! first aid kits? when i was a young thing, we just amputated, used fired to sear the wound closed, threw some leeches on it, and we were DONE! back to work slave! crack!

you people and your fancy bananas and tape!

now, if i had the $$$, i'd buy that blue tinted medical grade "super glue paste"... barring that, regular super glue is okay, but the rubber based type from modeling/craft stores is da domb. doesn't crack so much when you move.

stitches. there was this one time, zombies gored me bad, i used fishing line, and a needle i made from some coat hook wire to stitch my guts back in. hurt real bad, but i just bit down harder on that zombie femur, and kept sewing... the worst part was the puss, but after a while, those leeches fixed that. yup. in my haste, i sewed and extra arm on, but it works fine, so i just call that the gripping hand ;)

Here's a question: Say you have a nasty gash that you plaster shut with the duct tape: How to you switch out the "bandage" without pulling open your wound again? Soak it? Live with the tape for a few weeks and hope for the best?

oh my no way. you'd wanna have a pad or cloth or something under that, unless you're gonna die and all you have is duct tape, then re opening your wound with proper medical attention might be worth it. OUCH!! when I used duct tape on my thumb it was over a couple band aids....

i do it rambo style - a 10" bowie, a couple of .50bmg cartridges for the gun powder, and bic lighter...it should singe closed any bush wounds  nah, i have a couple of quikclots, compression/elastic roll, alcohol wipes, and a few orange bandannas. beyond that, i let my hiking buddies worry about me...they've been warned that i'm a bleeder :D

as far as actual use, i haven't had the need to when it comes to knives. from as far as i can remember, i think i've only been cut once or twice in my whole 32 years on this earth. i think hand-eye coordination plays a role and i've heard lefties tend to be more artistic/inclined towards it, who knows...mountain biking is whole other ball of wax though.

this terrain + ran out of talent:

did i say i was a bleeder? this wound took close to a month to completely heal. yeah, i should've gotten stitches...and i was too chicken to try the rambo style first aid :D
