First Antelope

I really like it. It is a little wilder than deer. the Tenderloin steaks are awesome grilled and served with mushrooms. Makes really good jerky too.

Here is some pictures of our hunting area.

Good job, Tony! Congratulations!!

I've been wondering how you've been doing! Glad to see you are getting out hunting and enjoying the fall, esp. with the lousy weather we've been having.

TTYL!

If you weren't hunting during archery season, it looks like you could lay down on top of one of those bluffs with a long-range rifle and a bipod and do pretty well!

Here is my first Antelope. I took it with my 62# @28" Caribow Taiga Recurve with a 675 grain arrow tipped with a single bevel Ziwiky broadhead.
Had a complete pass through on a quartering away shot. No blind or cover, the only thing I had working for me was the rain and the 30-40mph wind.

right on man... congrats... nice to see another trad. archer on here...:)

that looks like some cool terrain to hunt.. i would love to check out ND one of these days...

Thanks Plainsman. Yes we hunted in rain, 30mph+ winds and even snow towards the end of our hunt the first week of Oct.

why shoot something you are not going to eat?

i agree.. i even have a "you kill it, you eat it" policy with my boys, or esle they would squashing and killing things left and right. like boys do..:o

Sweet job man. I practice alot with my Long Bows and I know how much more of a challenge it is to take came with that as apposed to a compound or firearm. Taking game like that gives you great sense of pride and accomplishment. Excellent pictures too. What knife did ya use on it?

Somehow I knew the Becker Necker would enter this thread! :D

Another name we have for them is "speed goats"!

Spot and stalk is the only way I used to hunt them when I lived out west. One guy would sneak while another kept lookout from a mile or so away and give hand signals to direct the sneaker in. If the sneak was blown, we would try to have a guy stationed at a likely exit route to try to intercept them.

Our area had no water holes, we often wondered where they even found water!! We did find tracks on roads near mud puddles after rains!!

The antelope we hunted were about 100 miles northeast of where Turner is hunting and ours were GRAIN FED! :) No sage in that area, just lots of grass and wheat fields! So our antelope typically rivaled beef for taste and tenderness! ;)

Oh, btw, we did witness one antelope buck JUMP A FENCE!! He was running along one fence and came to a cross fence, it was either go the other direction or cross the fence, he jumped! That's the only time, otherwise they go under or through 'em!

antelope actually can jump/leap pretty well, for some reason they elect not to when it comes to fences

unfortunately this trait kills hundreds of antelope every winter where sheep tight fence is utilized- during a severe storms they will often crowd into a corner of a pasture and simply die- not a pretty sight come spring :(

fortunately we're seeing less sheep tight fence these days

dipbait: Yes, scientists believe that the extinct cheetahs could outrun antelope for a very short distance but unless they got their prey quickly, they ran out of steam and the antelope just cruised away.

You learn something every day. I never knew that there were a species of cheetah in North America...
