I made this for a friend who wanted such a thing made from a rasp. He let me do whatever I wanted with it as long as it had some kind of guard/quillon. It is 12" OAL. The quillon is made from gnarly wrought iron plate I found in the woods, nearby an abandoned homestead. I etched in conc. ferric for 2 hours. There are nickel silver spacers and deer antler and then a beautiful chunk of manzanita I got from Burl Source (I need to re-photograph... the finish was still a little tacky and you can see it!). The pommel is the head of one of the rivets stuck into that plate. I etched the blade in bleach soaked paper towels until I got nice patterning, then 45 seconds in ferric chloride.
I hollow ground the blade and did my best to keep everything symmetrical! Very trying.

I am always impressed when people can pull off a dagger like that. Your grinds look great, that knife is awesome.

That one turned out well! I especially like the handle; it gives it a very aged look! The grind looks very proportionate; overall I'd say you knocked that one out of the ball park!

When I entered this thread, I wasn't expecting something like that. Your friend if very fortunate, that is a remarkable dagger.

I really appreciate the comments folks... Very kind of you.

Somebody in another thread mentioned that the rasp marks look like dragon scales. Wish I would have planned that.

If I find the time, I can see myself doing some other medieval-esque projects. Would like to try a seax sometime... fun stuff.

The rasp "dragon scales" are very dramatic and definitely add to the effect. You think that is cool, try using a bodfile and then the teeth look like fish gills.

Just when that old rasp thought it was now worn out and only good for the garbage you went and converted it into something more splendid than it was was when it was all shiny, sharp and new. :D

A true work of art, and I agree with the "dragon skin" comments.

Well done, I hope there is more to come.

Mike

love it!! the pattern of the file teeth down the centre is realy cool and the handle truly compliments the overall design great work
