Gentlemen,

I'd like to show you my first knife. My funds and resources were both extremely limited, so the bulk of the work was done with files, battery-powered drill, angle grinder, and of course sandpaper. I heat treated and tempered it myself, in a campfire and the kitchen oven. The blade doesn't currently have an edge on it because all I have to sharpen right now is a Sharpmaker and I don't think that'll do the trick. I'll figure something out though. I can't do the sandpaper/mousepad trick, I know that much... I've only managed to make the knives I've tried it on duller...

I made lots of little mistakes, but thankfully no big ones. This is definitely just the first of many, I had a great time working on it. Total time elapsed, 27-29 hours.

SPECS:

1/4" 5160 bar stock
OAL, 9 3/4"
Blade length, 5", sanded to 800 grit
Handle material: Olivewood, with 1/4" brass rod pins

1/4"!! wow, that's alot of metal to remove with hand tools. Feel pretty good does it not. Looks good as well. Now go out and get it dirty.

You're off to a great start. You've shown you have one of the things it takes: patience.

Great job!
