First Balisong

A few years back my friend showed me his balisong and taught me one O&C maneuver. The knife was cheap looking and had not been taken care of properly. Nevertheless, I did the single maneuver for hours on end, and I am probably lucky it didn't break into pieces and stab me somewhere.

Now, I am looking to get my own balisong, but I have a few questions. First off, does anyone know of any laws concerning balisongs in Florida? What I really want is a nice Benchmark, but those are too expensive for now. My mom (yeah, hehe) said I could get one for around $20-$40. I was wondering if you can even get a decent balisong for that much. Also, I can hardly wipe my ass with my left hand, would manipulating a balisong in it help to build up coordination? Lastly, do I need to buy anything else? I think I'm going to pick up some tape to so I don't chop my fingers off, but what about for maintenance?

Any other advice you can think of would be grealy apprectiated.

Thanks,
Tzen

Your next best bet would be a Jaguar from www.knifezilla.com or wherever. I think it's a POS but, a good starter knife. It won't lock open or closed after the first couple of days with it. Also, you will have to repin it from time to time (see balisongxtreme). It will provide with a cheap means of learning tricks, which is what you want. I'd dull the edge with a honing stone or any rock if you don't have one.;)

Yeah I agree
The Jaguar is a good starter...
Don't get the one with the black insersts though, the handles don't stand up so well... get the one with the slotted handles.
I just got my new Jag a little while back and it is pretty sharp. I have sliced my finger and my leg
You should at least tape the blade if you don't want to dull it..

Thats my opinion
not that it means much... but hey, there it is

:D

Welcome to the forums Tzen.
You might want Pick up some Militech-1. Im not sure if the Jags pins will stay together long enough to make it worth it though.

LOL........

Yeah, I think with a little Balisong practice you'll soon be able to wipe your ass with both hands (not necessarily at the same time).

As for the Balis, the Jaguars that were already mentioned are good starters. You might also want to check out the new Pacific style Balisong over at KnifeZilla. I hear it's pretty good for the price ($40).

I also recomened the Jag as your first bali.:D I've had mine for about 2 yrs and I had to repin it about 5 times. (Its still going great to this day)But after repining it so much it just gets easier.:D You will need to knoe that once you buy a jag their pins will break within 1 week (if your lucky). To learn how to repin them go to clay's site. Its the best.At his site you can strengthen your muscles with his guide. I am curently waiting for my bm42A which I orderd it on the 13th so i sure hope i get it soon. So good luck with your sooon to be jag and ill see you on the forums.

Brian-ps welcome to the forums.:D

I don't have access to most of the tools that Clay's repinning tutorial requires. Therefore, I don't really think I should buy a Jag if it's just going to break within a few weeks. Does anyone else know anything about this Pacific Style Balisong? I take it that the pins won't break as easily as the Jag's? If it's double-edged, what about the manipulations that require you to ricochet the back of the blade off of your hand/finger? What can I do about the latch hitting the blade and safe handle? Any other information is welcome.

Thanks again,
Tzen

well with me, my hand would be too far up the handle to be in a "danger" area, but I'd probably grind down the blade anyway. I'm not too sure how I'd do it though, but still

You can put a piece of electrical tape on the sharp edges, that way you can manipulate [somewhat] safely.

Just placed an order for the Pacific Style bali. :D I know it's just a cheapie :p , but I'm so excited! I hope to get a BM sometime in the future, but this is just fine for now. Thanks again.
