First Batch of Sifu's have arrived and are being shipped out

I too was at Blade Show West today.

REKAT has a booth there. Both Christina and Bob were there. The one they had on display had the green G10 scales. To be honest, and I hate to say this, I didn't like the color too much. It is somewhere between a light green and a medium green. It is a bit on the dull color. I'm sorry if I am bumming any of you out. The one I have on order is green.

It is definitely a big, big folder. It is like a folder on some serious steroids.

I spoke with Bob about the deliveries. If I understood him correctly, he said that a total of 53 have shipped to WOW. I think he did one shipment and then another shipment a couple of days later. I hope I didn't completely misunderstand him about this.

Nah, dull is OK. Neon green would be a problem! I was hoping for a very dark green.... After seeing the pics, I think it's likely I'll pick up a production piece later and not use the frist edtion much.

Move over Vaquero Grande, There's gonna be a new megafolder in town.

Ewok,

Have you been reading my mind? I'm just waiting to get mine to see what works.

Mike

Hey CK could you do me a favor? I didn't get a order number. I ICQed Spark and he said the order went thru but I don't know what number I am. So if you could tell me what day and time you orderd it I can maybe figure out if I am in first batch or not. TIA

P.S PLEASE the not knowing is killing me. I have asked Mike too but he has not got back to me.

Yes, Molly and Mike, I have been reading your minds. You should both be ashamed of yourselves!

You guys need to also thank Jim March for this knife. The MEGA folder man from HELL has finally gotten his idea into the wonderfully insane mind of my buddy Bob Taylor!

Folks this knife ROCKS! I am holding one right now and if Bob let's us do it we will get some more. They will probably be the regualr production run but these things are... well.... WICKED!

Jim get's #1! Also Jim nearly trashed his bike on the way to Mad Dog's Knifigneugen and could really use some support...

He never made it there but this knife should make his day.

So look for more news soon and when you guys get yours please post a thought or two.

We will have all numbers up to 53 by early next week and I will get them out ASAP.

Many thanks to Jim March, Bob Taylor and his cohorts at REKAT, and all of the good folks at BladeForums.com…now where the hell is that damn UPS truck

! Seriously, I think everyone involved in the Sifu project deserves a pat on the back; this has to be one of the most eagerly awaited knives in recent years. The first premium MegaFolder has arrived (or is about to)!

The bike is in IC but it's expected to survive better than ever. I missed K'nugen but had a real interesting time out in the middle of the desert.

Spyderco's licensing of the Rolling Lock seems to have fallen through...do we have confirmation on that? That suggests that they're out of the immediate megafolder running until they can come up with something else.

Phil Gibbs and Will Fennell at Camillus are claiming Phil has a new megafolder-grade lock. No details yet; it'll be REAL hard to top the Rolling Lock for megafolder use...what the Rolling Lock lacks in smoothness should be made up for in pure blade heft of a magafolder, as Mike seems to have noticed.

My opinion: REKAT should make and sell an addition for the Sifu that replaces the thumbstud with a bolt-on Escalator hump! It could screw on via the thumbstud hole. The reason I had zero interest in the Escalator was that I was basically NOT going to buy a 3" defensive folder. Apparantly I wasn't alone in that. But retrofit that ability onto the Sifu and we've got a WHOLE 'nuther class of mayhem going on...even if Camillus comes out with a 7" beefier-blade megafolder, an Escalated Sifu would be a real serious contender for top defensive folder. It holds that title now in all likelyhood BUT somebody will inevitably top it.

REKAT, Camillus and for that matter ALL the rest should realize that people are making money selling 1.9" autos just for the California market. This is a BIG state. We can carry any length folders we want totally concealed, and megafolders open more reliably and smoother than typical "tactical" 3.5" - 4" blades.

These bad boys should be the new standard here in CA!

The RL rocks. It's true it lacks smoothness at first but seems to break in over time. It may have to do with REKAT's stone finish, the grittiness. Finally got Crawford's carnivore this week. This baby is smooth, which is probably due to the blade's satin finish. If not, then Rekat should figure out how to fix that because a smooth rolling lock is possible.

Although Spydero and REKAT failed to reach an agreement, I am sure the former will come out with something suitable for a strong reliable lock. Perhaps not for a megafolder though since we know where Sal stands on that one.

Jim, check the thread titled There will be No Spyderco Rolling Locks in the Spyderco forum.

Ohhhh ya. LOVELY. Outstanding. Sifu #1 survived the journey.

Sole quibble:

The "sharpness at the tips of the fingergroove points" issue isn't severe, but it's noticable. It's not that the steel liners are sharp, it's that the G10 bevels meet at a funny angle and form tiny points at the outside edge of each peak.

The good news is, a Dremel would be overkill for the problem. I think just a bit of hand filing will do just fine, unless the G10 is a lot harder than it looks? Less risk of doing gross cosmetic damage.

(Update: sure enough, a few seconds with a file on each point fixed it. Do this with the blade OPEN to eliminate risk of blade scratches.)

Other than that, what we have here is the first genuine high-quality megafolder. The AlMar QSV was seriously flawed, the CSVG was a Zytel lockback, albeit a decent one.

But this is a whole 'nuther level. Bank-vault-solid, easy to clean, tough as nails.

Cash well spent.

I'll do a comparison scan between it, the AlMar and the CS. It's actually a bit smaller than the others but it's worth losing .5" of blade length for the reliability and toughness.

Jim

Impressive, very impressive finally a recurved knife without a dorky looking tanto
point, and can still thrust with the best of them. This is most interesting knife I have
seen in years. This knife is as sexy and curvy as Pamela Anderson and most likely
smarter. ROCK ON Bob Taylor & Rekat!!!!
