This morning, I ordered my first Becker. Becker Necker BK11.

I also ordered a TDI Clip and Micarta Scales.

THEN ... I thought, ya know what, I'm left handed I need a left handed Kydex Sheath. It could have been ANY left handed BK11 sheath except I also ordered a TDI Clip and would like to actually use it sometime, so I next specifically a sheath exactly like the BK11 Kydex sheath, except left handed. Thoughts ??

I sharpen my knives with a diamond lansky set. I'm concerned about the BK11 blade coating fouling my hones. Has that been a concern for others ?? What happens when the coating eventually comes in contact with the hones? Does it just flake off or what? I MAY not want to remove the coating unless I need or have to, so I wondered about that.

Thanks !!!

EDIT: I just looked at a youtube vid that showed both sides of the sheath and it looks like the sheath is ambidextrous maybe (?)

I was a little confused with your question until I noticed you had edited it.

Yes the stock BK-11 sheath is ambidextrous and you can mount the TDI clip on either side as well as tip up or tip down.

As for the sharpening, I wouldn't worry about it much. Just take the time to clean your hones every once in a while.

Welcome!

I haven't had any problem with my stones / hones just given them a good washing and they are good to go again. Also if you ever want to look for an ambi-cross draw / pocket sheath; http://www.coyleoutdoors.com/ is the place to go.

They are amazing!

Thanks TBL !!! I stumbled on an earlier thread where you posted that sheath and link.
Looking at their site, they said not taking custom sheath orders at this time. Not sure exactly what that may mean ... if this sheath is stock or not ... but will wait anyway to see how the BK11, TDI, Micarta rig in standard sheath works out once it gets here before building on the inventory Lol. A leather sheath sure might be nice though. I read one comment somewhere that said the Kydex sheath tends to dull the knife ... dunno.

BrotherJim - Kydex does not dull the edge at all. The problem was with the factory sheaths a couple of years ago. They were giving some people trouble so Ka-Bar changed the sheath material and then the design. If your new BK11's sheath has the new style sheath, you will not have a problem.
Please post pics as soon as you get it! We love BK pics!!!

Are the sheaths made of Kydex now or are they still injection-molded glass-filled nylon? I ordered the knife from Tomar's and the listing doesn't state the material used.
Other sites list the current material used in the sheaths as injection-molded glass-filled nylon, so I just don't know.

This video below gave me pause concerning glass-filled sheaths vs Kydex.
While the video is from 2011, the sheath looks to be the current model for the BK11 even if the knife in the video is a BK14 EsKabar.

I have a custom made Kydex sheath scoped out (Azwelke) and am ready to pull the trigger on it because I won't settle for a sheath that dulls the edge, but need some feedback before committing to the custom route.

Thanks !!!

EDIT : I stumbled on this thread concerning the new sheath and posted just last month ... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ew-11-14-24-sheath-work?highlight=bk11+sheath
The Tomar's site I ordered from still shows the older sheath. Guess I'll just have to see what gets here when it gets here.

Congrats!

The newer sheaths shouldn't dull the edge as shown in the vid. But the only way to really know is to do the tests yourself. If it dulls the edge then order a new kydex sheath.

Thanks Travis !!! ... I just sent an email to Tomar's to try and find out if the new sheaths are shipping from them yet or not. I should know more tomorrow.
If the new sheaths are something other than glass-filled nylon, I'd rather have one of those than a third-party custom Kydex (i think Lol).
That way I could still use the TDI clip I also ordered.

the sheath as delivered and held in the right hand is a right hand only sheath, sorry.

however, if you hold it in the left hand, it becomes a left hand sheath :D

with that setup, you can mount on a belt horizontally, vertically, or a weird angle :D

It just means Tate is super busy. ;)

Thanks guys !!!
Received an email reply from Tomar's ... the BK11 ships to me today, with the new style sheath :)

Bladite, I'm diggin' that weave you incorporated into your carry mount. Nice
And that's the only way I would use the included 550 cord (for belt wear). Who wants a ready-made garrote around their neck, able to withstand 550 pounds of pressure ?!?!?! ... for neck wear I'll be using a 20-pound-break strength dog-tag ball chain.

yeah, take the core out, save it :> then you got a flat. i do have the ends tied in a knot, for neck wear, but mostly so that i can lark's head the whole affair to something other than my neck.

didn't take too long to figure out the weave on my own, just happened. couple people have copied it *cool*

Well I think maybe you've had that weave for some time and I hadn't seen it before. That's a first generation sheath I believe? You've not had a problem with edge dulling and that sheath?

i may have scooped some material out or otherwise you know, done something like that...

then again, i don't tend to keep my knives at 12000 grit atom splitting edges, so perhaps it takes me long to notice dulling.

i even keep factory coatings and edges going as long as i can, before i reprofile, on a new model, to see just what it can do for me, and how long ;D

probably i also don't play sheath the knife 50 times an hour like some do. lol.

Yep, good points Bladite. The thing that gave me pause was in the video where three (3) swipes on the injection-molded glass-filled nylon sheath rendered the blade unable to cut a sheet of paper. Maybe it was still capable of doing stuff. I'm sure it was, but the point concerning the sheath was made IMO.

... and I ordered some custom fancy G10 contoured scales for the BK24 that I will use instead of the plain somewhat flat plastic ones from the factory. The ones I chose, still leave the butt end of handle/tang exposed in case of required hard bumps. Not that I would beat on a knife like that, but OTOH, options are good. The circle opening in the end is exposed larger than the plastic ones from the factory allow as well.

And the wait for receipt of all items begins.
