First Becker. Which one to get?

Hey, this is my first time posting here in the Becker sub-forum but I've been lurking here quite a bit. I know I'm gonna get a Becker for my next knife but am not sure which to get. The knife will be used as an outdoor/survival knife to carry while hunting, camping, hiking, etc. So it will be used for cleaning game (I have other knives for skinning), fire prep, and possibly making shelters.(Along with any other tasks that may present themselves in the woods. I've narrowed it down a lot and am mainly deciding between the BK2 and the BK16.
Thanks for any advice.

This certainly won't be my only Becker btw. I will probably get a bk14 next.

While the 2 is a beast and a fine piece of steel, I find myself grabbing the 16 when I go afield or to the woods camping/hiking . Its lighter and thinner, slices better and its lighter. (did I say lighter) I have semi retired the 2 to my truck edc bag. The 16 is currently in its stock sheath on my coyote grab and go bag, and gets more use. Not the worlds best skinner but will cut a shooting stick in a heartbeat.
If you are looking for a blade to process deer and other game, take a close look at the BK15. It is an outstanding knife for gutting skinning and processing, and is great in the kitchen too.

Unless you specifically want the thicker blade, I'd recommend the 16. Mine has quickly become a favorite for routine tasks.

*edited to add: Love the 15, too!

My only reserves with the bk16 is that it might not be as good for fire prep/shelter prep. If I got the bk2 I might just leave it in my pack and carry a bk14. Is the bk16 readily capable of fire and shelter prep?

I've considered the bk10 but I'm not really in love with the clip point.
Thanks for the input

Stand by for pics of a modified BK10 Clip point. May be the best of both world. I just finished up grinding and sanding on my new 10. I don't like the clip point either. I'll post one here tomorrow. I think it looks pretty good.

The 16 is an amazing knife. It can handle a lot but the BK2 can do the heavy chores a lot easier. If you are doing mostly lighter stuff and some heavy, then go 16.

And trust me, you will have more than a couple Beckers before it's all over with. :)

The BK10 is great as well and the clip removal is an easy mod. I didn't like it either.

A perfect trio is the 16, 11 or 14/24 and the 4 or 9.

Ya I certainly plan on getting more Beckers in the future but am just looking for a "jack of all trades" for my first.

Absolutely the 16. Its the most versatile of the bunch. A good man with a knife needs nothing else.

I would also give serious consideration to the BK5. Ethan has said he considers it the most under-rated knife of the lot. Many folks have bought one later and wished it had been earlier. It is the one I use most.

Or you could just go ahead and take the plunge and get them all now...this would make it much simpler.

My wife bought me the BK 14 a few weeks ago. I've always been into larger blades. At first....I honestly didn't want it. In fact...I was this close to sending it back. I didn't send it back but decided to give it a chance. I've been wearing it as a neck knife every single day and I have been using it several times a day.....every day. Its invaluable to me and I feel absolutely naked without it.

Its not going to have the size and weight you may be looking for in a pure camping/outdoor/survival tool.....but you will be surprised at the usefulness and variety of tasks the BK 14 is capable of.

I think the BK 2 will fill the role your looking for quite well......but if you added the 14 to it......there's not much you can't do.

Your going to end up with both, so you might as well quit trying to avoid the inevitable and just get them both out the way in one shot. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow.....you will be glad you did.

On second thought.......the 14 is a survival tool. About 2 hours ago......I was in the company van and there is a large, thick plastic guard that most vehicles have under the radiator that sits behind the front bumper. Somehow......the fasteners came loose on the back of this plastic guard which caused it to partially fall and drag on the ground.

You know the sound you car makes when you have large chunks of ice packed up underneath the tire and wheel well? This is the noise it made non stop.

At a toasty 10 degrees.....I crawled underneath the van best I could and used my 14 to actually cut through this 1/8 inch plastic guard that was about 3 feet in length.

How does that make the 14 a survival knife? Because if I didn't have my 14 handy and was not able to cut that plastic off from making that dreaded non stop irritating noise......I would have killed someone out of anger! Since everyone survived because of my 14.....that makes it a survival knife in my book. What a wretched noise!

Well I bought my first Becker as well (literally ordered it like an hour ago). I went with the BK16. Just seems more practical for what I want in a knife right now, and I feel that the bigger BK2 would get left behind more because of it's size, where as the BK16 I won't mind keeping on me most the time

I agree wih some of the previous posts... I would suggest the 10 as it is a great compromise between the 2 and the 16. It is a large and sturdy blade that will handle he more demanding camp chores such as fire wood/ shelter etc yet the blade is not too big as to be clumsy when trying to do detailed/finer work....or you could buy both the 2 and 16 ... Just saying

A couple of months ago I picked out my first Becker knife. I chose the BK 2. I chose it because it is the first Becker knife I ever remembered seeing in advertisements and I figured if it is still in production and selling well they probably got something right with the design. I am totally happy with my choice. I would not change it if I could. I was at first surprised with how thick and stout the blade is, and then I started using it. I always had the impression that thick blades were only good for chopping, prying, digging. I soon found that the BK 2 does a fine job at every task I have attempted. It can be used for delicate work and heavy use with out missing a beat.

I've now reconsidered the bk10. After looking into it more it has kinda grown in me and I can always grind the swedge back. If I do get one though I will save up to get a bk16 in the near future.

The BK-16 is all you need and that is after buying the BK-2 and BK-7. I would not baton using a 4" log however to pound on it. :) I sort of like the BK-10 but I have so many knives in the general blade length that I really don't need it. But it will eventually become part of my accumulation.

I'm probably gonna get a 16 and the 10 or 2. How does the 10 baton in comparison to the 2. I know the 2 is better but is the 10 comparable?
