first benchstones?

I liked my DMT 6"x2" Dia-sharp stones, but for something like a bk7 you may want the 8"x3(?)". It may be over budget for the larger ones though.

Benefits are; they cut quickly, don't need to be flattened and don't need water/oil.

Detriments are; they take while to wear in, don't leave as good as a polish as waterstones (unless broken in), the diamonds can be broken free of their bond, and are comparatively expensive.
 
I like the diamond stones, but for a larger knife, you would probably like larger stones.

You could buy 2 of the 8" plates for $100, maybe coarse and fine, and then buy more as you wanted to.

The bigger plates are really nice for small knives too...
