First blade is broken

I just looked at the table... And I have some questions about it. What is the soaking time, and the time of heating to required temp. ? Please now that Im a newbie and I know little about heating. But I am determined.

P.S. Is that table only for w-2 or is it for all steels?
 
Carbon Steels I believe - may apply to W2. BTW are you sure it's W2?

Don't worry about soak times for right now. Not really necessary for carbon steel at blade thicknesses for newbies.

Also, you should practice hardening without forging first. Save yourself a lot of pain.

Heat slowly to non-magnetic.
Quench
File test - file should skate off surface
Break off a piece and check for smooth texture.

Then move on.

Cool I will besure to do that this weekend. About the metal I was told by some one on anvilfire that; that particular nicholsom file was a pre 1980 made with w-2. other than that I do not know..... :D Thaks for all the help

I've heard more than my share of the PING. At the time, once you know what it is after the first time, it sounds like the friggin' bells of St. Mary's cathedral ringing your death sounds. Back to the forge Amigo.
