First blade worthy of showing in the maker's forum

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for patiently answering my questions over the last year or so. A few years ago, I was tinkering in my garage. One thing led to another and I shaped my first blade from an old file, like many have done. Since that time, I've made several nice stock removal blades using hand tools. Then, I built a forge... You get the idea - I have the bug...

I thought I'd show my thanks by posting a pic of my latest forged blade. It's technically the first forged blade I've completed without any aid from another knife maker. It's the 10th knife I've completed. The only power tool used was my drill press - everything else was by hand.

I would especially like to thank Tom Kernan for showing me the ropes when it comes to forging. The information he gave me in just one afternoon at his home was incredible.

Here she is:
Forged from a Chevy truck coil spring. (The hamon wouldn't pop out, even after days of sitting in vinegar, so I gave up on it. It's there if you tilt it just right in the light though.)
The handle is paracord over black twisted cotton cord.
Blade: 5"
OAL: 9 1/4"

Thanks for looking.

P.S. I'm making a small kiridashi that I plan to trade in the exchange forum for a knifemaker's membership. So, eventually I'll post in the correct subforum.

I like what I see. Would it be possible for you to post a photo showing the spine, and one showing the other side of the knife?

sure!

The lighting makes the point look blunt, but I assure you, it's not. The blade has a nice flowing geometry, all the way to the point. I'll try to take a better one.

nice, nice handle wrap
does the blade bend slightly to the left or is that an illusion? (the picture of the spine)

No, it's an illusion. I took the photo near a window and it caused a glare effect on the spine photo. I checked it on a granite block after heat treat and it's flat. I'm just a crappy photographer.

Great job!!! I have to learn to do the wrap, my fiance wants a tanto to cut our wedding cake :) Gotta love a lady like that.

Haven't forged anything yet, but would be pleased as hell to get something as nice as that out on the first go-it-alone! Very nice "sweep" to the blade and as mentioned by others, the wrap looks great as well.

Regards,

Dave
