First Blade

I will try to get pictures up of the profiled blade late tonight some time. Hopefully I get all my honey-do stuff done today so I can have some shop time tonight. :D

One of my current filing setup. I desperately need to get a vise!
One of the knife blank and the razor blanks. The round tip is profiled 90%, the square tip hasn't been started yet.
One of just the knife blank. I need to get a better round file and half round and a bigger flat file before I do too much more profiling.

Couple of things I see looking at the pictures. The choil needs cleaned up and made symmetrical. I'm probably going to grab the dremel with a cylindrical stone and clean it up a bit. Also, the handle and finger notch need cleaned up. I really have to get a decent half round to do some draw filing on it. The handle needs a little bit of a drop to it too.

One of the guys over at SRP told me just to get Harbor Freight files for my first time making stuff, then decide if I like it and then spend the money on nice files. I went ahead and bought an 8" single/double cut mill bastard Nicholson. Yesterday before I started working on them in earnest I bought a 4 pack of 12" files at HF. Total CRAP!
I was advised that Craftsman files were decent. Any comments? I like my Nicholson.

I posted this at SRP:
I'm taking back my harbor freight files. What pieces of absolute shit! I don't like to cuss like that, but they are horrid!! Five minutes and dull. My US made Nicholson is still goin' strong, but the HF junk is going back! A super false economy!! Junk!! I'm spending twice as much and buying good stuff. It is worth it.
