Scales on (micarta made from a real nice pair of Joseph A Bank wool dress pants that went in the dryer by mistake). Time to profile.
Came out of heat treat, dark grey and a file skated across. This is post temper, a beautiful bronze
No cracks or warping. Thank God.
Second build if you count the one I did for my father in law from an existing blade (at the bottom). I have been working on this one for a while. 1095 1/8" thick. Just something for myself to hopefully learn about the art. I started on a 1x30 bench grinder freehand to see if i can get the feel for making bevels. I wound up with it pretty even, but convex more than a flat grind. It's slow at work, so i have been filing the bevels and they are much flatter now. Using the file is giving me a better feel for what is actually going on I think. Feedback appreciated.
And the first one. My FIL is half Cherokee and does the whole pow wow thing. I wanted to make him something that looked the part with sentimental value. The center "pin" is an inlay of crushed sea shell my kids collected. The guard was a silver spoon that was his mothers. The outer wood is walnut from a tree we took down in his back yard and the center wood is rock maple from another tree we took down.
