First Busse

I'll be a troublemaker and suggest the ASH-1 just to be different. :p

The ideal Busse is of course the SHSH.

Just got off the phone with Kathy; what a nice gal. We talked about the options and I settled on the CG BWM, unfortunately I got hung up on the handle material and color combo at the last minute so told her I would call back to finalize the order. I was going to go CG BWM with Black Blade and the Black and Orange G10. Then I was reminded that I'm not paying for a safe queen, I want to put this baby to work! I really like the grip of canvas handles like those on the RC-4. What are your thoughts on G10 v. Canvas handles and any pics out there of CG BWM color combos? I'm thinking black blade and tan canvas handle. Love to see some pics!

Btw, I'm in San Jose, CA if anyone feels compelled to let me squeeze the charmin. Though probably necessary as Kathy alleviated my fears re the magnum handles (she's 4'9" and has no problem with them). Yeah, I felt like a wuss. Btw, Kathy was very cool and patient with this piglet to be. She took my name and number and put me in line for a knife just in the odd chance they would end this run. Though she said it doesn't appear to be panic time with respect to ordering. Only bummer is going to be the wait; she mentioned a 4 - 10 weeks lead time (just in time for summer I guess). My first trip to Yosemite is early July - and I really can't wait!!

Thanks again to all of you for being so helpful.

The micarta vs G10 debates can go on endlessly here. Many of us prefer the grip of canvas micarta on users. Some guys don't like the potential porosity of the canvas. YMMV.

I know we have members out your way. Maybe one will see this and reach out to you.

Yosemite is such a great place. I have only spent a little time on the valley floor, but the place just knocks me out.:cool:

I had this same sort of dilemma a while back. I ended up with a NMSFNO with a Spec-ops sheath.

And a BATAC. And 2 SJTACs. And a Swamp Rat M9LE. And a Swamp Rat M6. And a Rodent Waki. And another M6 (custom shop variant) that I gave away as a gift. And a Scrapyard Scrapper 5. And Scrapyard Yard Guard, which by the way is an awesome do-it-all knife.

You see how this is going? You're next.

In my 47 Busse knife search for the perfect carry in the woods knife, in comes down to the SFNO and the SAR8, the SFNO is a little better around camp knife, but the SAR 8 beats it for wackin trail bush out of the way.

Yee haw and soo-ee, soo-ee, and soo-oo-ee! Yes, I took my first sip from the trough this afternoon. :) Probably more appropriate to say, Amy-O bottle fed this baby piglet a CG BWM in Tanker Grey w/Black Canvas handles :D Boo Yah!! It took me a good 10-15 mins to settle on a color combo and I changed my mind at least 3 times on her. What a patient and supportive advocate she was! I'll be honest, I'm still lusting for the orange g/10 on black; and if my time don't run out, the LE beckons too. Must stay calm, must hide credit card, must find sheath before first Mistress arrives...pics will be up very soon ;-)

Thanks again to all of YOU  for the great advice. Though, I have one last question, how did y'all explain to the Misses, that ya got a Mistress? My wife knows I go on buying tangents and she knows knives have been my other "love" for the last 6 months, but this might give her cause for concern. She's gonna say, "so what's next?" To which I suppose I'll reply, "why, a Rodent Waki of course!"

If I could only have one it would be a SAR 8 in any flavor. I like my BWM, but not nearly as much as my SAR 8. Here is a pic of 3 SAR 8 SE's above an FSH.

And if you are in a hurry, you're in luck. I would have emailed/PM'ed you this info but it's not an option on my end. If you want one without the wait in the price range you are talking about, a brand spanking new SAR 8 LE sterile with no markings can be had from the Busse Company Store http://bussecompanystore.com/knives.htm Just click on the "order here" page and it's right at the top for $597 but it is low inventory so there may only be one or two left.

You can't go wrong with a BWM though either and I like my Orange/Black G10 much better after hand sanding it to the shape of my hand. Here's a pic comparing an FBM LE with Blue/Black G10, an NMFBM LE with TigerHide handshaped micarta and a Pumpkin G10 BWM.

You can't go wrong with G10 or Micarta. You can always sand it to the feel you like regardless of material or color. For me, smoother G10 is preferred over anything else, but smooth Micarta feels really good too.

Hope this helps without complicating things more. :o I just like people to know all their choices.

Ordered on 3/6 and received on 3/23 (knife actually arrived yesterday but I missed the mailman).:grumpy: I have turned this thing over and over looking for anything out of place and I just can't find anything. It's absolutely perfect. Seems to be pretty sharp, but not hair popping. I've never had a knife this big so I'm a bit overwhelmed. The grip is nice and it's much lighter than I expected. My better pics must be too large, I can't upload them. :grumpy:

I can't wait to get in the woods. David is making me a sheath so I will very soon be set for adventure. Thanks to all for the excellent recommendations and the wealth of information. I really learned a lot and so far I'm exceedingly happy with the decision to buy Busse. :D

I would be remiss if I didn't thank the folks over at Busse, not the least of which were Kathy and Amy who explained things in great detail and made me feel like a valued customer. I won't forget that EVER!

That's great I'm sure you'll have fun with your new Mistress. Now comes the hard part, which one to get next. ;)

Boy,that was pretty quick delivery.

Yeah, I think you get a quicker turnaround if you buy toward the end of a production run. Amy might have mentioned something to that effect, but I won't quote her on it. Nor do I have any insight into the production cycle, but it seems logical to me. I'm certainly pleased with the timing and most impressed with the shipping. I got an e-mail saying it shipped on Friday and it arrived on Monday (from Ohio to California). I checked the tracking number on Monday just trying to guess when I would need to be home for the mailman and it was already on the truck for delivery, so I missed him. :jerkit:

So far all good...just waiting on the sheath (BuyBrown exposed spine in CF). I'll try to get some more pics up when it gets here. :)

nice choice, and welcome aboard, feels like you are on top of the world, it did when i got my first busse at blade last year. look here for leather sheath: http://www.chuddybearleather.com/
and here for kydex: http://www.buybrownholsters.com/
both are reasonable and it is great, quality stuff.
maybe you can make it to blade this year and meet everyone, take care and enjoy

Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty freakin' stoked. I would love to do blade, but I'll have to research the logistical details on that one; I've never been. What's it like? I'm guessing that's in another thread, but thanks again for the kind wishes and you take care too.

What do you think of it after playing withit for a bit? I just ordered a BWM LE as my first Busse!

I think you're going to be very impressed. One word immediately came to mind after a careful study of the knife - Symmetry. Wanting to make sure my vocabulary was correct, I looked up the word to see if I was right:

Symmetry generally conveys two primary meanings. The first is an imprecise sense of harmonious or aesthetically pleasing proportionality and balance;[1][2] such that it reflects beauty or perfection. The second meaning is a precise and well-defined concept of balance or "patterned self-similarity" that can be demonstrated or proved according to the rules of a formal system: by geometry, through physics or otherwise.

I think the knife captures the essence of both meanings. For what I was looking for, essentially a "grail" camp knife, I'll be very surprised if it doesn't meet my needs. Though none of us can predict unusual situations where something more is necessary; I think it's going to be perfect. I haven't used it, but I see it as "light weight, but heavy duty". I don't think I'll go crazy and cut a cord of firewood, but I'm guessing it will handle pretty much every camp chore you can throw at it.

Let me know when you get your LE. I'm still considering that one and I'm curious what the delivery timeline looks like. ;)

man, i went to blade last year for the first time, blade was recommended by a local cutlery shop owner that is a friend of mine, and then i got into busse knives with honorable mention going to "dobywon" and "gatman" for introducing me to busse knives.
all i can say is blade is a knife collector/lovers dreamworld. if you go one time, you will return, i can't wait.

you will meet knifemakers, company owners and other excellent people and then you have the busse crowd, we are in a league of our own, so don't miss it...

it is the shiznit, just come and you will not regret it!!!!

after all of that you get to meet skunk and partake in many nutritional beverages!!!
