Well, here is my first completed knife.

1084FG From Aldo Bruno
12" OAL
Flat grinds
Approximately 1/4" Thickness
Micarta handles with 3/16" brass pins

Many knife making sins were committed in the making of this knife. Some steel and several belts were also harmed. Please feel free to comment and/or critique! Thanks for looking. Also a very special thanks to Nathan Burgess (Silver_Pilate) for doing the HT for me.

Looks like a very nice field/chopper to me :) Great job.

Looks like the center pin is a little off center but no biggy if it's centered in the handle width.

well dam that is nice for your first knife.I know with that kinda craftsman ship the next will be better

Hey Ed! Great job finishing that up! I've been keeping an eye out for the finished pics of this one. Thanks for posting 'em. I think you did top notch on that handle. Hard to tell if the pins line up in the picture, but I bet it's close. ;) It took me several knives until I could figure out when to stop the grind so that it didn't go past the spine. I found that if I stopped short and then walked the grind up with a sharp fresh 400 belt, I could stop the grind just right for a smooth spine all the way to the tip.

I'll tell you guys, I got to hold this blade, and it feels like it's going to be a great chopper! Lots of meat throughout and a very good job for a first flat grind. Glad I could help you out with this one, Ed.:thumbup:

Thanks everyone. I learned a lot on the first one. That center pin is a little off:o I'll try and make a better next one. I have a couple ideas and a ton of "dont's" for the next one.

good looking. Nice and clean for a first try. I know where you are coming from about learning a few things, and harming steel. I had to shorten my first attempt, because I filed one 2ndary bevel right, and when I flipped the knife over, I was not paying attention, and did the other front bevel (on a square knife) exactly opposite.

Very nicely done! The handle shaping looks especially nice.

Is it black linen micarta? What tools did you utilize to make the knife?

Thanks!

Tools: Coote's grinder, Klingspor/Scotchbrite belts, Nicholson files.

Handle: Micarta/Phenolic from Pop's

Looks real nice! Black linen Micarta was the first synthetic I tried as well. Really nice stuff. What method did you use to attach the scales? Drill tang, glue slab, drill through tang, glue other slab, drill back? Or all at once? This one would look good with a tapered tang. Next time, maybe?
