First crk and it has a minor issue

hey guys not trying to post this to down crk or anything. However I purchased an umnumzaan new and the blade came with a recurve in the edge and rather ugly uneven tip. The tip doesn’t bother me as I can reprofile free hand or with a bga ko. The problem is the recurve. I contacted crk and they said that it should go away with normal use. Sorry but any time I’ve has this in the past it doesn’t go away on it’s own...only gets worse.

Now I understand I could put the edge straight to the stone and work the knife from choil to tip and essentially grind the entire edge away until it catches up with the recurve and then reprofile it. Downfall is I lose a ton of metal with this.

I can place the edge against a known flat object and see what appears to be .003 line of light starting about 5/8 from the choil area and extending about an 1.5” toward the belly. I get this measurement because I can slip a piece of phone book paper under the recurve area but not a piece of printer paper.

Seeking advice on what you guys suggest doing. Thanks in advance

You said you bought it NEW? My follow up question would be did you buy from a dealer or an individual. If dealer I would contact them if the recurve bothers you. As far as individual how did you pay? Have you contacted the individual? etc

I bought it from an authorized dealer. It was their last one. Crk said they could fix it but it would decrease the sharpening life of the blade. I know it’s probably. It is not issue for most people but in all honesty shouldn’t a brand new knife at 425 dollars come with a perfect blade or Atleast no recurve that’s noticeable just by looking at the thing? Then to top it off instead of replacing the blade they give my only options as either deal with it or send it back to get some life removed to fix it. Sorry for venting. Just makes me a tad irritated ya know. Still love the knife honestly Just wish this recurve was not there is all

I wouldn't send it to CRK to fix I would return it to the dealer for a refund if they don't have any others in stock ... and look for another from a reputable dealer.

Any solid dealer would accept the return and refund if you contact them and explain the issue. And a refund not only saves you money and time .. it eliminates the issue of sharpening more of the blade.

just my 2 cents worth ... JJ

You'd have to ask the dealer if they'd take it back. I'm sure they could be convinced.
Send it back if you're not satisfied with the knife. Yes, it's aggravating to wait on a knife only to have to turn around and send it back. If you're expecting perfection, and it appears you are, then that's the price you have to pay.
Either you'll have to wait until the dealer you bought from has them back in stock, or buy from one that has them in stock. It's showing GP Knives have them in stock.

I agree with Peter on this ... and I couldn't guarantee a dealer would accept a return if you stropped it ...

some would just because they have great customer service ... and if it was only stropping on leather and didn't change the knife any they may but I would contact them and ask and be honest about the problem and the strop use ... being straight with good dealers goes a long way.

but anytime you buy a NIB knife if theres an issue just return it and if you stick to reputable dealers they will exchange or refund if theres an issue ... and saves time and money sending to the manufacturer.

Will make sure to keep a keen eye out next time(large inkosi next). I do love the knife and perfection may seem like what I want but in all reality I’m just more bummed it will look funky after awhile. Especially when I have to fix it.
I will post some before and after pics tomorrow and show y’all the difference. The edge my other s35 steel blades takes with a fine dmt and balsa loaded with paste is unbelievably awesome so I’m hoping this Reeves ht is just as good! Thanks guys

What a bummer.

I’m surprised that CRK did not offer to change the blade.

Hope you can get the issue resolved. Agree that a new knife should not have such a major flaw.

That’s what I was thinking they would offer but no luck. At the same time though it doesn’t mean the knife won’t cut and therefore I guess is still acceptable to their standards

I received a Small Sebenza 21 about a year ago that had what you are describing - a recurve edge due to poor sharpening from the factory. I ended up sending it back to the retailer for a refund.

This is my response as well.

I agree that a knife like this shouldn't come like that but once you alter it the dealer is off the hook. Even after you alter it i don't think crk is obligated to do a free blade swap. Not saying you are at fault but how does crk know you didn't put the recurve in the blade?

I would say your options are to keep it as is, sharpen it out yourself, or send it in for them to do. Another alternative is to send it to one of the pro sharpeners we have here on the forum.

I understand I shouldn’t have even touched the blade to the strop I bought the knife to use it though so today I’m going to take it to the stones and set a new bevel and see how it cuts. I think I will gradually fix it over time by cutting into the stone and removing edge material a little at a time. If it gets too out of hand I will have to pay for a blade swap and I’m totally ok with that because I am going to get some use out of this sexy blade That is for certain
