I know this has been posted a year or so ago, but like myself, there are new members.

This is my older setup but it still sees use time to time.

Not a very good setup, I know, hopefully when I get my Fallkniven S1, I will make it better.

Yep great stuff. It's easy sometimes to get hung up on gear (I'm guilty of that) But you can always go back to the tools oyu trust.

Well said...back in the day, some 30 odd years ago, I would spend 2 weeks at a time in the Sierra's with a pack, sleeping bag and my only tools were a US issue Camillus pocket knife, a pair of small needle nosed pliers (multi tool pre-cursor!) and a beat up Ka-Bar. Got along fine.

Now, I spend 1/2 an hour figuring which blades to bring on a day hike....Yeah, we tend to make a big ado about something very basic. If it works....right?

Nothing wrong with that kit at all. Although I don't know why you have the folder there, unless it's just some kind of a light back-up knife. I think it's kind of redundant: you already have the Mora, and a folder isn't as nice to have in the woods than a proper fixed blade. Then again, your mileage may vary. When you get your Fällkniven, your kit is going to go from good to brilliant. :)

Thanks for the comments guys, but I messed up on the title, it was supposed to be What was your first/current woods knife/setup.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

My first was a 2 blade, well worn pocket knife that my Dad gave to me about 50 years ago.

Your setup is very nice and with the addition of the Fallkniven, it will be optimal with one exception. You don't got a SAK w/saw. :D

In my teens and early twenties, I used to woodsloaf with a Vic Huntsman and an Ontario USAF Pilot's knife. That USAF knife was as durable as a stone axe, but unfortunately it's about as sharp as one!

The first dedicated 'woods' and hiking knife I used was a hand-made tommipuukko. Before that, I just used the same knives for pretty much everything. Actually, I still use the same kind of knife most of the time. Nowadays my woods knife setup is either a tommipuukko or a Fällkniven F1 paired with a M.95 Sissipuukko or a stuorra niibas. For those that don't know, the tommis look like this:

Hey Barny...

Nice set up..

Absolutely Nothing wrong with those knives what so ever.
You've got a Good folder, Good Multi-tool and a Good fixed blade...

Seems like a good start to me...

Now you need a good Chopper, Hatchet and machete!!

You'll be all set....

Nothing wrong with that set up at all !!!
I often set out armed only with this little buddy....

if you think that stuff's no good, i'm afraid to imagine what you'd say about my beloved sak's. my two favorite knives are the battle mistress and the pioneer, practically polar opposites in the knife kingdom but my battle mistresses never get used and my saks are used all the time. all my main users are well under $100 (delica, mora 760, dumpster mutt, villager him imp, sak's) and they'll do any job as well or better than knives costing far more.

you need no more than what you have, except maybe an axe/machete. everything else you get from now on is unjustified enthusiast spending. better to face the truth, many of us haven't.

Forgot my current prefered setup. The M2K, along with one of Eric's fine sheaths and my favorite SAK.

I've allways been wondering about the grind on the M2k, does it have any use, does it aid in cutting, how well does it work?

Barny, that IS a very good setup. I once bought four (4) of those Frost's Clippers identical to the one in your picture. One went to Iraq with a friend of mine, and I still have the other three, plus a yellow one in stainless I got for my wife. (Girls don't go for OD green and black for some odd reason.) As far as cutlery and tools go, all you need to add to that kit shown is a small hatchet or a short machete, depending on where you plan be. Good deal, Lucille! :D

Very cool setups guys, I might be tinkering tonight with mine.

Hikeeba- I actually started this thread because I saw yours in the archives.

My first woods knife was a Muela Bowie that my father handed down to me. I still have it, but I can't seem to find it for a pic. It has about a 4 to 4-1/2 inch clip point blade, a black handle, and a brass hilt and guard.
