First Custom Order

yeah I did make that clear overall length should be 48 inches with 36 inch blade and 12 inch grip, not chiruwa style, in hammered brass ( or silver if the man is better by then) and I want the bands done in silver instead of brass. but yeah I think its gonna be amazing , even if it doesnt turn out exactly like the picture, I am really excited to let raj kumar work with that style and see how he manages to interpret the crescent tipped kachin dha style sword. the blade thickness I asked be 3/8 at the grip getting up to 1/2 inch at the crescent tip, and that any cho like embelishments be done at the back of the spine at the tip rather than on the grip, the fuller is going to be much deeper than a traditional chirra, making it only about 1/6 at the central fuller going from grip to tip about 1 inch wide, as in the picture, with a wide flat spine to add weight , followed by another large slab just behind the cutting edge, almost an hourglass shape I guess if you look at it top town, but the bottom hour has a thorn?

but, I am prepared to wait, since my order is definitely not just asking them to resize an already familiar shape, I offered to buy all mistakes and or blems leading to the final construction. but that doesnt mean I would try to keep the design from others, just that I wanted auntie and raj to know it would be worth trying even if it seems much different than usual requests ( since the blade is so different )

you guys will know if this guy ever wins the lottery because there will be a small empire in Nepal built around HI and we will construct a royal armory for cthulhu, all kami (and their family )will walk on silken pillows and be pampered by perfumed servants(this will require the big lottery , probably like a billion, but after that we are square)

Gehazi, nice sword.

The CD on the picture is there for your dimensions.
Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in)

So here what I can tell you based on the picture: Total length is approximately 885mm, handle 210mm and blade width 25mm

I didn't use a CAD so there is margin for errors. But that 885mm makes it at 36 inches total... Yours will be about 12 inches longer than the original.

very cool, and appropriate, because I did want a larger, almost ceremonial version , in case I ever need to decapitate a goat for a religious festival, thanks a bunch for the true measure

to be clear I found this sword on a forum where a very lucky young man received it in honor from his grand father , a weapon that has been in their family for over 150 years , it is a registered antique of india and therefore can never be owned by a westerner because of the ban on the sale of cultural treasures

this is really the only way I can ever come close to owning the art of that blade! -- if anyone can do it , HI can

Wow. 3/8 to 1/2" 36 inches away from the handle...EEEEGADS!!! You will need to do one of them bottle cutting vids on the tube cept you'll need about three 55 gal steel drums full of water! That there would be a "Valley of Vision" Rajkumar would be your man!

it will be the height of impractical ! just how I like it-- but yeah I am very happy that I waited until now to make a custom order, as I did not know about or want these kinds of blades until kronkcew posted his dha collection, then i started hunting for antiques and found this picture

thanks a bunch for the true measure

You are very welcome. Although I have a disclaimer on the "true", it is probably fairly close.
If you use the same technique with a cad, you could get true true measurements :-)

If this sword is going to be a user you may want to consider the makers expertise as well (you prolly already have?). The difference of an inch or two makes the difference between slamming a steel pipe on a concrete floor vs. a clean slippery cut! Seems Rajkumar has made a few swords and must know to take the vibration characteristics balance etc. into account. Giving him some freedom to adjust things may be very important. Im no sword expert but I do know about beating on things with sticks and pipes and such:rolleyes:

absolutely ndog, I put in the request that the kami have the last word on what is practical and doable, in the end using the picture as the main guide, I want a Raj Kumar HI Kachin Dha , not an exact replica of that sword. I definitely want everyone involved on the craftsman end to use their expert know how and make it the best blade they can given the parameters and adjusting as they need. Though I dont ever plan on using it in any way other than putting it alongside my antiques and khukuri HI collection , beside my guns and books. I also want the date, and factory etc , basically enough sigls to cover the spine or the fuller in devangari coolness and make it look like a saucerous blade of great provenance
the bawanna and bluelander threads inspired me to begin my own long term display project for my collection, I have to find a place for all my fathers stuff as well as he was a lifelong ww2 and ww 1 collector , so hopefully I will have a place for the raj when it is done.

Cant wait to see it. Man you guys with all your customs and displays and stuff making me want to get my house finished sooner. I already have a wall ...or part of a sphere that will be dedicated to my blades. I want to put the Kamis pictures by them as well. I want people to put faces with these blades! Well done my friends on all your customs! Whhhhhhhhaaaaaaaa! My turn! ..uh..oh Bawanna hates whiners....scratch that wha......

Yeah Indians would take care a lot more of their treasures than westerners, one would think. Sadly the awareness, knowledge and appreciation of antiques in India's general population is lacking. Of course the average Joe has different priorities but even the rich guys use treasures more as show pieces and if a historical armor has to be hung on a wall then why not drill a hole through it? Have seen that, old photos which rot in their frames due to the humid weather and more. :o
While I prefer everything to be kept in Indian museums I don't see why privately owned things should not be transferable into the hands of enthusiastic westerners. This way lots more things would be stopped from fading away. Even if its at the price of a more global distribution its well worth it in my opinion.
Anyways, my wife is Indian, maybe she can buy stuff which she gifts me (a westerner)? :p

i would be first in line man, but as it is it is illegal for us to buy any antiques from china, india, all of the east --- thankfully most of the truly great antiques come from UK when they were pillaging every nation on earth.-- most of the antiques dealers I have had contact with source the good stuff from UK diplomats and soldiers from the victorian era on up to the present.

and like you said, because of the way the west is about antiques, we actually end up being a lot more preservation minded about these things, hence the modern mega prices on chinese antiques, mainly from the UK
being bought by chinese collectors who want to reattain cultural history not preserved in their own nation because of political upheaval and other more pressing concerns.

and ndog you have a handmade custom house, made by your own hands-- that blows most of what the rest of us do out of the water in terms of gumption

I've noticed that when somebody gets delivery of a custom knife from HI, there might be one or two similar knives offered as a DOTD that week. (I don't recall this happening with swords, though.) Perhaps a couple are made, and the best of the lot goes to the person who ordered it. Happy sharking!

Gehazi that sword your getting sounds like it will be a real beast of a blade. Im curious what the weight on something like that will end up being. For my custom Salyan I emailed the specs and material I wanted and then did all finalization over the phone.

I can't really finalize until raj is ready to take it on, kami very busy with all the other projects but I am in line !

Ok so with the current power shortage at the factory in Nepal it might take a little longer than I was expecting but I'm sure it is still going to be worth the wait when I do get my first custom.

yeah definitely, you just gotta be patient ! and keep an eye for good blems, you may find something great!

The custom orders are on hold (They told me to ask again in March.), but can you order the basic models?

not sure on stock right now , would have to email, pay attention to blems for a deal, but there is some stock, there have been many problems lately with relocation and new kamis etc , so there was a slow down.
