I've finally decided to buy my first custom!!!!!! The criteria are as follows
1. under $1000
2."functional art" (I want a beautiful knife but that can still be carried)
3. absolutely no recurves
4. 3-3.75 inch blade
5. nothing overly thick

I'm currently considering the Brian Tighe Tighe Fighter does anyone have any opinions on that knife?

Please comment any recommendations!

p.s. First post!

John W. Smith.

While Brian Tighe makes an excellent product I don't like the extent to which he uses CNC in his builds. I feel that JW Smith's consistency is also a little bit better.

Welcome.
Search the cove, ton of great customs out there.
Andre Thorburn or Andre Van Heerden.
Both make amazing knives at very reasonable prices.
Van Heerden's are a little tougher to find though.
They do make a collab.
Good Luck and Cheers

Second the J. W. Smith also. Highly underrated.

Alan Davis, a gentleman right here on the forums, makes great looking and functional knives.

Marcinek linked to the forum where the resident forum makers sell the knives they have created. A spot on recommendation.

There is also a forum where individuals (with the proper membership) can sell their privately owned custom knives. Check it out!

Dealers too!

Checkout the Knifemakers forum under folding knives, some really good Knifemakers.

For the stated budget of around or below $1000, OP can do better than the knifemakers who are active on this forum. It's not a great market for custom knives at the moment, and having a more in-demand piece is always a safer investment.

Wow! That's is extremely rude.

There is some serious talent on this forum, and I'm sorry if you can't see through your own ignorance to realize that.

I don't see how it's rude. A lot of customs move extremely slowly if at all these days. When you can easily find for around $500-600 a Thorburn or John W. Smith, both of whom produce knives with quality rivaling the top names in the game, then you have to ask the question of whether to spend almost that much on an obscure maker whose knives won't resell if the need arises. I don't think I'm far off when I say that a Thorburn or JW Smith will sell much more readily for close to what you paid than an Alan Davis, a Chuck Gedraitis, or a W. Wells. Talented or not.

The op is not talking about reselling, just have a custom knife made and you dis the Knifemakers forum.

I fail to see why resale shouldn't be a part of the discussion especially considering how active the secondary market for custom knives are.

I doubt he was expressly interested in having one made specifically for him by a maker as Brian Tighe is not taking orders.

People's tastes change and financial necessity comes up. There are enough options for custom knives out there that there's no need to limit oneself.

I'll mention two favorites (one already has a couple mentions) - Andre Thorburn & Bruce "Bing" Bingenheimer. One of Thorburn's knives was my first custom and I've never looked back or regretted getting that ball rolling (despite the gateway drug in turned out to be! ). Thorburn's work is well know and deservadly so...no need for me to say much more. Bing is newer to the flipper/folder game, but doing some very cool stuff and makes a knife that would seem to fit your criteria - 3.3-3.5 inch blade, thin stock, innovative use of materials to create that "functional art" aspect...just really excellent work all around IMHO. And yes...though I have not seen him sell here on the Forums, he does post his work on occasion (on his own or via proxy) and thus represents what is indeed a treasure of talent here on said Forum (just reach out to a maker whose work you like - creating those relationships can be one of the more rewarding parts of the whole hobby/experience).

a couple gratuitous knife pics (of Bing's work...please excuse the Higo):
