First Damascus Knife Finished!

Great job Rob. She came out very sweet. I sure wish my 8th knife came out that nice...hell, I don't think my 80th came out as good.
Well, I had a good instructor to help me finish it up :)

Can't wait to see what's next, maybe a hidden tang. :p

Glad to help out and your always welcome here.
Thanks again. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions or wacky ideas.

Love the knife, especially the way you made the scales a little smaller than the perimeter of the handle area. When you go to all the effort to make a billet like that, I really hate to cover a beautiful piece of steel with handle material

J. gets full credit for that idea. I actually really like the inset scales from both a looks and a process perspective. They really add a little something extra by not hiding the steel and making them is actually a lot of fun. When done like they are on this one, it makes for a nice thin knife too. I think the scales on this one are about .12" each.

Looks good! I like those ironwood scales in the picture, too.

Those are Butch's, and if you can believe it, they're cocobolo, not ironwood. I just lost an ebay auction for some cocobolo that was even more crazy than that.

Monday evening I get started on a sheath with a friend from my blacksmith guild. I'll update with pics once that's done.

Deker,
Great work all around! I'm curious to see how your stencil turns out on the dark damascus pattern. That is the reason I opted for a stamp instead. Sometimes I sure wish I hadn't! Maybe if yours shows up well I'll reconsider?

Beautiful knife. Not just a great first but a great knife period. How long did it take you to make.

Darned good question. I suppose I have about 2-3 hours in the billet, 1 1/2 hours in grinding, an hour or so for HT (not counting tempering time), and probably about 6-7 hours in finish work (I made 2 sets of handle scales for this one). So, I guess that's 10 1/2 - 12 1/2 hours. That's about half the time I had been spending per knife, but this one was a lot simpler since there was no guard to fit and no hidden/through tang issues.

Thanks again for the kind words folks! Sure helps keep a guy motivated!

Sweet. Is that the one you were working on at the blacksmith guild meeting?
I like the contrast. Keep them comming.

Nope, it's the one I had as a blade blank at the Timonium show. I just finished welding up a new billet. Not sure if I'll get a blade out of it today or not, but it should be another wild low layer count pattern. I'll be test etching once the billet cools down and I can grind a side flat.

More on the way! I just need to find the time to work. It was nice having a week off of work to finish that last one.....

I had someone that knows what he is doing to help guide me with that project. I was learning while I was doing. I didn't make the damascus though and YOU DID....and you're welcome.

When I see someone else writing it, it seems to mean something else quite different and painful:D Goofy bastid huh? Have you worked with me at some point? :D :D

Well, if you're ever in PA, stop by and then YOU can make damascus too. :D It's not that hard really. I'd much rather pound out a 500 layer billet than make a folder :)
