so doing up my first billet tonight. Have watched videos read many books and think i have a good shot at doing this right. Any tips or tricks out there that i maybe havent picked up on. i did the clothes hanger weld to end when it stuck to know i was at welding heat my temp probe bugs out at 2000 k. my intial weld looks good but how do i know before i procedd with doing all the layers if it was a good weld? or is that something you find out at the end?. Thanks Pete

I could comment a little on cable but not on strait damascus, yet!

If you're curious, you can cut a section off of the end of the billet, grind it to about 400 grit and etch it. It'll give you an idea how your welds went....

so far i think it went well started with a smallish billet 1 1/2 tall buy 1 inch wide. broke it down to about 1/2 thick and just a hair larger then 1 inch wide so far the welds look good i can see on the far end that at the very end the top piece didnt weld but i plan on cutting it off anyways, also the billet stuck to my press die and a had to hit iti off is why i think that far end piece didnt weld. plan on doing a twist at about 208 layers sound right or more layers?thanks pete
