First day carrying a fixed blade and LOVED it!

I recently made my first knife out of CPM 10V. It's a fixed blade with a 5" blade, around 10" overall. I love trying new steels, and this is my first 10V knife. I've been wanting to try it forever. So, despite the size of the knife, I just HAD to carry it today. I made it more as an outdoor knife, and it will accompany me on many backpacking trips, but I couldn't wait. So, armed with a newly made kydex sheath, I clipped it to my belt and went to work. I do carpentry work about 70% of the time, with the other 30% being outdoor guiding. Today was carpentry.

I was AMAZED at how much I loved carrying a fixed blade. Sure, I wish it were a little smaller (I'm making a few smaller ones now), but the size didn't bother me. I quickly got used to the feel of it, and I loved how fast it is. I saw someone else in another thread say that fixed blades are faster (to deploy) than folders, but didn't really buy it. I knew that technically it was true, but didn't think it would be practically any different. I was wrong. It makes a huge difference. You just grab the knife. That's it. No flipping, thumbing, studs, holes, etc. You just grab the knife, pull it, use it. It just felt so right. I also liked that I didn't feel bad about beating on the knife. I chopped some stuff today that usually would have had me walking across the shop to get some sort of saw.

I was already making a couple smaller fixed blades for EDC rotation, but I have a feeling my folder collection might start collecting dust once I get them finished. I'm even going to keep carrying this big knife. The sheath keeps it high and tight to my side, so I can easily conceal it when in public.

What do you guys like about EDC fixed blades? If you've tried to carry a fixed blade and didn't like it, why not?

The very few times I tried carrying a fixed blade, and a 3.75 blade at that, I got from multiple people "who are you planning on killing today with that knife?"

Technically it used to be against local ordinances to carry a fixed blade anyhow, but I did it a few times just to test the waters. Now that the state of Oklahoma has preempted all knife laws, eliminating city, town and county laws (which were mostly too restrictive anyhow), fixed blades are no longer illegal. Same for switchblades, which are legal here as well. Being I work on an Air Force base, I shouldn't carry a fixed anyhow. But I could point to a few women (I won't) who have fixed blades in their purses. I think it's cool personally.

Also Open Carry of firearms is legal here now, soon a permit won't be required either. But I still prefer to keep my firearm hidden and keep a CWL on my person. So I'll just stick with LARGE folders, and not have to answer stupid questions about killing people. It's sad though.

Congrats! When I started carrying fixed, I had no idea that I would all but forget about waved megafolders. I carry (openly) something between 10-12" overall. I prefer a sharpened length 5.5-6.5" with an emphasis of more blade than handle.

Here is my recent EDC:

It goes well with a GEC #18 in African blackwood.

And you're in California to boot. I open carried a 3.5 inch fixed blade one time while I lived there. Got asked by a cop to take it off or conceal it, because someone had complained. Fuckin LOL!!!

But you're in Fresno. That's kind of a no-man's land in California. Been there a few times. Farm country. A knife probably doesn't attract a lot of attention to all the illegal immigrants that live there. ;-)

Nice Bowie knife btw: Looks really good.

I wish I had a comfortable way to carry a fixed blade. I don't like in the waistband because the handle rides too high and blocks movement, and I don't like my sheaths hanging at my side (when I am anywhere other than out in the woods).
I would probably like carrying horizontally, scout style, but then I wouldn't be able to see to make sure I don't cut my belt loops off.

So that's why I end up carrying folders unless I am out camping or hiking, but I love fixed blades.

Try carrying inverted... Or as it's been dubbed, CM carry.

Check it out, CM... we got another "Follower of the Fixie" here. :D

Ccc, it's all about try and try again. I was the same way, then just ran into the setup that worked for me.

Bought a Camillus / Fisk OVB Bowie that I was sure I'd never carry. But it rides like a dream and I love carrying it.

Keep looking and I'll bet you find something that clicks with you.

Welcome to the party, Alfazulu! Fixed blades rock - I carry one, even if it's just an Izula, every day and can't imagine not having it with me.

And I'll beef up the fixed blade in appropriate situations - here's a pretty typical system for me:

But, even if my medium to large fixed blade isn't on my belt, it is close by in my messenger bag, which I carry daily like a briefcase.
