I recently made my first knife out of CPM 10V. It's a fixed blade with a 5" blade, around 10" overall. I love trying new steels, and this is my first 10V knife. I've been wanting to try it forever. So, despite the size of the knife, I just HAD to carry it today. I made it more as an outdoor knife, and it will accompany me on many backpacking trips, but I couldn't wait. So, armed with a newly made kydex sheath, I clipped it to my belt and went to work. I do carpentry work about 70% of the time, with the other 30% being outdoor guiding. Today was carpentry.
I was AMAZED at how much I loved carrying a fixed blade. Sure, I wish it were a little smaller (I'm making a few smaller ones now), but the size didn't bother me. I quickly got used to the feel of it, and I loved how fast it is. I saw someone else in another thread say that fixed blades are faster (to deploy) than folders, but didn't really buy it. I knew that technically it was true, but didn't think it would be practically any different. I was wrong. It makes a huge difference. You just grab the knife. That's it. No flipping, thumbing, studs, holes, etc. You just grab the knife, pull it, use it. It just felt so right. I also liked that I didn't feel bad about beating on the knife. I chopped some stuff today that usually would have had me walking across the shop to get some sort of saw.
I was already making a couple smaller fixed blades for EDC rotation, but I have a feeling my folder collection might start collecting dust once I get them finished. I'm even going to keep carrying this big knife. The sheath keeps it high and tight to my side, so I can easily conceal it when in public.
What do you guys like about EDC fixed blades? If you've tried to carry a fixed blade and didn't like it, why not?
