Hi everyone.

new member here with a first post asking for some feedback on my first decent EDC knife purchase.

I’m tossing up between the Benchmade Bugout and the benchmade mini griptilian.

I’m looking for something inconspicuous and not too big(I’m a minimalist).
I think the bugout colors look less scary but is also a larger knife. The griptilian is heavier (80g compared to 50g) would this be a big deal? I want to forget this is in my pocket.

Price isn’t really a factor, i want it to last against constant light to medium usage (i have a fixed blade if i go camping or something) and occasional abuse from someone that doesn’t know what he’s doing :P

Do you guys and girls have any thoughts? Oh and I’m going to take off the clip.

thanks :)

The Bugout fits in a pocket really well (easy to get past it to the other things in your pocket).
The Griptillian I love but it is kind of fat in the pocket . I love the heft of the Mini Griptillian with full liners, a satisfying knife to own and use.

Study some Youtubes etc. using a knife vigorously with out some knowledge is a recipe for injury. Don't ask how I KNOW THAT.

Using the axis lock one handed to close the knife kind of requires the clip to have something to hook your fingers on. Try it with the clip off and see what you think.
Even though I carry my full size Griptillian in a belt pouch I found that I still want the clip on so I can one hand the axis lock more easily.

No first-hand experience, but I have given my boy both of those knives. Over time, the Grip kicked everything else out of his pocket, except for the occasional side trip. Since I gave him the Bugout last year, it has supplanted the Grip as his No.1.

You can’t go wrong either way. Me, I’d start with the Grip.

Great replies, thanks everyone. You all touched on something I wasn’t sure about and youtube didn’t cover in clear enough detail :)
Bugout it is.

Thanks for the insight. I guess I’ll have to get one to understand.

I'd agree with the idea to watch YouTube reviews. Beyond what the reviewer can tell you, seeing the knife in action and from different angles can help a lot.

Another consideration is that there are different configurations of the Griptilian. For instance, you can get it with a Spydie hole instead of a thumb stud.

Now, let me step off the track here with a few questions. You're looking for your first "decent EDC knife purchase". What have you carried before? What attracted you to Benchmade? How much window shopping have you done?

The griptilian is a great knife and if you go for the large you will have an EDC capable to be really abuse

however if you want something light that disappear in the pocket, the bugout is really the way to go. It has a medium size just in between the mini and the large griptilian that makes it a great all around EDC
The design of the bugout is not one of the « like a tank » thing for sure but it can still take some abuse

i had a mini and a large DR Griptilians that I sold, but I keep my Bugout

i have a ranger green version that is sweet

If I had to pick between the two it'd be the bugout, which I happen to own the BHQ exclusive blackout one. I put some Flytanium G10 scales on it and it is 100% better with them

I've owned both and the bugout is not only still around but is also one of the best knives that I own.

Especially now that I have the rouge bladworks micarta scales.

+1 on a Bugout for EDC vs the Mini Grip.

However, for an "outdoor" EDC I prefer a full size Grip to the Bugout.

I've had the minigrip with g10 & 20cv blade 4-5 years and carried it almost exclusively until maybe 2 years ago when I got a bugout which I then carried almost exclusively. Recently I've returned to the minigrip, which would be my first choice if I could only keep one. I prefer the better steel and inherent strengths of the minigrip. The bugout is a great knife and I really like it a lot. Just not quite as great for my purposes long term. Upgrade the steel to 20cv and add g10 or cf scales would make them virtually equal with some minor dimensional variations. Both will continue to see pocket time for the foreseeable future.

"Disappear in pocket" = Buguout.

You don't NEED the clip to operate the Axis lock. On the other hand, you don't need to remove the clip to have this thing vanish in your pocket either. It's short, unobtrusive and carries very deep. If you want to drop the knife into your pocket without clipping it to your pants, it disappears just fine with the clip still on it. I've actually used it as a money clip, dropping it into the bottom of my pocket clipped to a few bills.

You can upgrade to some really cool scales as well. (Grooved green micarta Putman scales, I'm looking in your direction.)

For me the bugout blew both the cheapo and the g10 mini grips out of the water so I sold them.

I carry my bugout more than most these days, but I'm still keeping my full size grip because it's a great knife
