First edc knife purchased and was happy until...

I passed by a cutlery store today and thought... just do a "quick stop and look", you won't budge. You're happy with your new purchase, which is a "Cold Steel Mini-Lawman" (I just posted a review on, my first post). Very nice little knife, for the price. No complaints...

So as I'm looking around in the store and pass by a few benchmades, thought to what's all the hype about these "axis-locks". Asked to see one, 904 mini stryker. Just messed around with it for a minute and was impressed. For such a small knife it has very large price tag and very, very smooth action. Grabbed a few different models just to compare and most of them had the same smooth action. Very different feel from my Cold Steel. Saw a few Spyderco's and they have some nice designs. I felt the blades were pretty large, even with the smaller knives. So now I'm thinking which one I want and did a comparison, benchmades and spydercos. Both which had similar type locks. The 904 won me over. I really liked the axis-lock and the look of it (black blade & handle). Again, pricing was pretty high for this type of locking mechanism. Couldn't justify it right then and there so I had to leave...

Why couldn't I just be happy with the mini lawman I'd just purchased! Researched a bunch of steels, reviews, etc. And all that went right out the window because of a "quick stop and look". Am I about to drop $150 to $160 on a single blade? Are there better deals for a mini stryker (904)? Being new to knives in general, in my mind it's very hard to justify. And I know there are much, much more expensive knives out there. I'm starting to see why (Quality, ergonomics/design, "Action". Which you need to go a try to find out). Hoping for a little help finding a deal.

You're doomed, it's like a potato chip, can't have just one.

Only advice I'll give you is stay away from impulse buys. Welcome to the forums

Welcome to the forums!

You are screwed bro... it never ends. The quest is an epic journey that only gets more and more expensive! Enjoy it.

My only advice is to use whatever you buy. Screw safe queens. The true enjoyment comes from using the tools and learning what you like. As far as recommendations go, I am not really a benchmade kind of guy so I cant really help there.

If your goal is to only have one pocket knife, and you now have one, stay out of knife stores and away from knife forums. Assuming you are happy with your choice, continuing to look can only decrease your happiness with your existing knife and make you spend money that you don't need to spend.

I have been lurking in the exchange forums hoping to find a deal since... But can't get it off my mind... I'll probably break and just get it... Lol. Thanks everyone, advice taken...

ak-
Welcome to the club. The whole knife thing is an amazing diversion/addiction. One way to offset the pain is to develop a keen eye for what sells well here on the exchange, and you may be able to carefully buy and sell and break even as you go. It has to be said... most of us probably thought this way at one time and now have a sizable investment in trading stock. I know I do :)

You can never have too many knives. Many serious knife nerds here carry a different one every day, or whatever fits their needs on any particular day.

Remember this simple truth...

The "Last Knife You'll Ever Buy" is the knife you'll use to open the packaging of your new knife.

Never fails. I've done it around 500 times...

In hindsight, I've proven my own insanity.

Use your knife and you will like it... if you don't use your knife and look at others you won't end with one knife and maybe with many knives you will not like much

Yep, you're hooked. I suspect we'll be seeing more of you around here. You won't be able to get the next knife out of your mind either. Enjoy the ride and welcome to the forum.

If I my suggest, use your new EDC for 30 to 60 days (90 days would be better) before you buy anything else. That way you have a better idea of what really works for you before you spend your hard earned money on another knife.

With that said, Benchmade's Stryker series is top notch. Why they are dropping them is beyond me. One of the better knives they have ever produced, IMHO.

You're killing sabercat... after telling me to wait and then hitting me with a "better get one while you can" post! Lol. Now the pressure is on.

Not sure if I can also ask this but would anyone try and save some money by purchasing from eBay/Amazon? Or no, better to go to an authorized store, touch and see what your purchasing? Pay the extra, peace of mind. Last thing I want is a fake and not know it...

Reading this as I'm opening a new ZT with the Lionsteel I got a week ago. Good luck with being content OP. I personally don't see any need for it.

it only gets worse but the above advice to build in some checks and balances is worth heeding none of us do but we all know better

I see a 904 on sale for $104 from Knifecenter, say goodbye to that Benjamin my friend.

Sorry, but it is not my fault BM dropped the Stryker. I want one, myself.

How would you have felt if you took my advice to wait, only to find the Stryker's all sold at the end of that 60 days? You would have grounds to say mean, nasty about me, my two cats, and the BMW motorcycle I own. Maybe even all in one sentence. We can't have that, can we? After all, this is a family forum.

As for the eBay/Amazon thing, the forum supports sponsored retailers. Not sure if the Bay or Amazon are sponsored. I think "the Knife Center" has them on sale and they are a sponsored dealer. Very good to work with. Ask them to hand pick one for you.

Your next mistake will finding it for half price, only to find out it is a counterfeit. Remember, if it is a great price and ships from china or Taiwan, almost surely it is a counterfeit. The hunt is half the battle, enjoy it but buy from a reputable dealer. I saw one on Blade HQ for $99
