First EDC?

Hey everyone.

Wondering if I could get some of your opinions on getting my first serious EDC.

My friend had recommended me the Spyderco Native as a nice, intro EDC. I never had the chance to experience his before he got rid of it, but I'm not sure I'd be a fan of the G10 handle. I guess I don't know until I try it, but I know some folders just tend to be expensive without the G10. Reviews say it's a great knife, but I figured it's best to ask your opinions. As this being my first serious EDC, I could imagine myself keeping this knife forever, and that's important to me, so I'd like it to last as well.

Anyway, this is somewhat of what I'm looking for:

3" Blade (like to be legal for this)
$100 or less
Made in USA

I'd love to hear all of your recommendations. Thanks again everyone.

The regular Native comes in a FRN(plastic) handle, but is also available in carbon fiber ($150). With you criteria you should be able to find several knives. I love that you want a "Made in USA" knife. Be sure to check out other brands as well, Benchmade and kershaw have good offerings too.

Spyderco is having a sale of CPM-D2 foliage green G10 paras for $99 on their website. I just measured my para's blade and it came up close to 3 inches even.

How capable do you want your EDC?

daily utility chores alone? Do you live in rural or urban environment?

Or would you also like some defensive/ survival capabilities for EDC?

Check out the Kershaw R.A.M., S30V blur, ZDP189/S110V shallot as well.

EDIT, sorry didn't know it was 3inch blade. Look at the R.A.M. and the many styles of the Kershaw Leek then.

The Para is an excellent recommendation, but it's out of stock. Spyderco has a search function that allows you to search by country of origin.

I meant FRN, apologies for that mistake about the Native.

I'll also check out the Paramilitary.

On the job I tend to use a knife at least once a day, but nothing extremely needy at the moment. I work on a maintenance crew.

For college I'm in somewhat of an urban environment, but at home it's the opposite. Defense/survival would be important as well, especially for hiking and hunting season, which I do quite often. Almost always outdoors here.

Be aware that the s30v blur recommended at most retail outlets is gonna be pricier (but worth it) great edc's in that range though are... a Spyderco Native, Caly 3, Delica, Endura, Kershaw Scallion, Blackout, Leek, Scallion Benchmade Griptillian, 530, Lone Wolf Harsey T1 (also really good), and many more... take a look at suggestions go with good user reviews and failsafe warranties and you won't go wrong these are all great companies that make great knives just personal preference

I have had an "Ontario RAT 1" for about 6 weeks now. It has everything Ive ever needed in an "all around EDC," and only cost me 32 bucks with shipping.

It has a full flat grind, 3.5 inch blade, strong liner lock and metal liners, AUS 8 steel, and good feel in the hand. Feels like it will last me a long time.

Check out this utube review by "nutnfancy", he does a good job going over it:

Anything in the Spyderco salt collection is a good bet because all are made of H1 steel and will NEVER rust...

I think that a Ka-Bar Folding Dozier should be plenty for a first-time EDC. It's not a knife that's meant to be babied and it cuts very well while being relatively easy to sharpen when compared to some super steels. This means more practice sharpening, more use on whatever tasks, and to top it off, since it's built up using torx screws, you can take it apart and clean it if necessary.

Oh, I also forgot to add that it's extremely light, which means easy to carry.

If you get a knife with a steal that has weaker blade retention you should think about getting a spyderco sharpmaker

hard to beat a Kershaw Blur for an all round EDC. 60bux, AO, good edge, whatelse would ya want in an EDC?

however, my brother in law said every Kershaw he's ever had, when dropped, lands point down and NEVER works right again. so.... don't drop it LOL

Kershaw OD-1 is a good choice for an EDC. Good steel, wickedly sharp, frame lock, quick and efficient blade depolyment, DHS legal & American made.

Take a look at the BM Mini Griptillian. Simple to open and close and very utilitarian. Good pricing. People complain about plastic handles, but it's really pretty tough stuff.
Eventually you're going to want one, so why not start with one?

The RAM is a jam up knife that you can pick up for around $52.00 if you shop around and the D2 Para is very nice at $99.95. I have both and highly recommend both for EDC.
