First edge- metal flakes?

I refined my heat treating of 1084 and i feel like i am getting better results. My question is, when i put the first edge (after heat treat, sharpening) I used a 120 grit belt to put the first edge on. unlike in the past, the entire edge had the same resistance and i achieved a very nice symmetrical edge on that first stage. I noticed that the edge, in addition to raising a nice burr, had very fine metal flakes on it. As I progressed through the grits to 600 and then honed with a leather belt, i did not see similar flakes. The edge was wicked sharp and testing indicates it holds the edge very well. are these flakes normal on the first grit?
