This is the "Last Chance", 5.5" blade and .250" thick with vibrations dampened micarta scales.
This knife if VERY heavy for its size but the handles fit just like a glove.
If you have some heavy duty work to do, then this baby will handle it. Made from S3V with black baked on coating.
This is my first of 4 I will be getting hopefully in the not too distant future.

Cliff,
The micarta slabs are mounted over rubber vibration absobing inserts (between the tang and the handle slab)
They are made of 3V not S30V.

That is an excellent idea, I like the feel of rubber but the durability of micarta has its advantages. Nice clean blade design, I generally don't like index finger grips, but if it fits you hand in your primary use.

I have a Last Chance and I love it!! It is one of my favorite all around knives. You will love the CPM-3V it is great. Congrats on your new knife.

I believe the term is F3V, or Fehrman3V.

My understanding is that it is standard Crucible 3V steel, and the Fehrmans feel the need to differentiate their 3V from other 3V because of their extensive (and very likely superior) heat treatment and cryogenic treatment that they put their 3V through before passing it along to a customer.

Two 3V knives at the SAME Rockwell C level but different heat treating processes can have significantly different edge retention and lateral strength characteristics, or so I understand from the many makers that I've heard and read. Thus I believe that the Fehrmans are well warranted to differentiate their 3V.

There are in general differences among heat treatments for the same steel, it would generally be more than a little confusing if every maker/manufacturer decided to rename steels.

Cliff,
I really don't care what they call it as long as it does the job they say it will do and so far it far surpases the amount of work I would expect from a 5.5" bladed knife. This knife IS TOUGH, strong, with a great edge. I looked at some of their pictures of them testing 3V blades and was very impressed, infact it looked like something you would do to a knife. They dropped a 50# block of steel on the exposed side of a blade attached to a steel bench and the blade shot that 50# piece of steel like it was in a catapult. Then they finally broke the blade after putting it in a vise and bending it with a GIANT pipe wrench. The blade did not break until the pipe wrench swung under the bench that the vise was mounted on....that's just about a complete fold of the blade.

So call it 3V or F3V and I will still have 3 more coming in the mail!

I have the smaller (4 inch blade) Fehrman Peacemaker, which I use for utility purposes. I would not trade it for any other utility knife. I chose it over similar offerings from Dozier and Busse, on account of its safer handle (bigger guard). It cuts great for general utility use around the house and yard.

Muzzle - Great looking blade!!!

Does the Kydex sheath have a TekLok on the reverse side? Or some kind of built in belt loop?

Also, if you don't mind stating.. how long was the Order / Wait time until you received the knife.

Thanks

Hillbill.....

Yes there is a tek lok on the back side and it took a little over 4 weeks to get mine due to a lot of sickness and back logs.
Eric emailed me and said the wait time should not be quite as long now that they are getting caught up.

Nice piece u got there!!!

Now u got me wanting more fehrmans!!!!

Can u post the links to the testing pics?

A quick note on the steel - CPM 3V (Crucible Particle Metallurgy), we do not use any other designation for the steel type. Also we do not typically Cryo treat our knives. Crucible has said that Cryo does not signifigantly alter the grain structure in 3V like you might see in other steels that show great improvement with the Cryo. treatment process.

Jay,
If Cryo. does not do that much for 3V then I would think that 3V blades would not get brittle in colder areas like Alaska or Sweden. That would be a very positive attribute to my way of thinking.

Make more knives  , I have to have something else to order now!

Ron, if you don't mind-how big are your hands? Maybe palm width, and length of fingers, along with the thickness and width of the Last Chance's handles, something like that?
Just curious, 'cause I had a Shadow Scout, but it was too light for my intended use. Had two Busse Natural Outlaws, but the E handles were too wide, so that wasn't a good fit, either.
You know...still looking for that "perfect" field knife, even though I rarely get to spend much time outdoors anymore.

Owen M,
I guess the easiest way to tell you about my hand size is to tell you that I take a size SMALL in men's gloves...I think that is about a size 7-71/2. I had a Busse Battle Mistress "E" handle and it was much too big for my hands. My Last Chance I can grip the handle and wrap my thumb around and cover the tips of my first 3 fingers. From what you describe about your hands I would bet that the Fehrman handles on the First Strike(got one on order)and on the Last Chance would fit you to a tee. With the Last Chance in my hand my pinkie just touches the base of the pommel where the lanyard hole is located. For exact measurments of the handles of the Last Chance and all the knives with the larger blades, I would send Eric and email or ask "buttonpusher", Eric's brother Jay, on this forum and he might give you better measurments then I could.
Owen, maybe this picture will give you an idea:

Hope I helped some
