first few tries - grind quality?

When i started grinding i had a lot of trouble. It took me 6 months to get good at it and several years to be able to grind a knife thin. Use sharp belts and let the belts do the work. Learn to grind setting and standing. When you get older you will have to sit. I have a very good friend that ground knives for 40 years. He had a lot of problems when he got up in years learing to grind while sitting.

I have to agree with harry is there is some way to spend a couple of hours with a knifemaker it will make a big difference. I have had a couple of people in my shop and they really got the hang of it.

From Experince I learned that the tidbits that are tossed your way are real jewles. These guys toss out little thing on how to stand, lock your elbows, and hold the knife and they are really important.

Sounds like you are not holding the blade steady against the wheel, you may be too low. Get a good stand, lock your elbows, with a fresh belt and smooth motion without alot of pressure try to get one steady pass. Then find that grove and make another.

thanks everyone. i think stance is part of the problem, in the past when i have seen people grind they are standing right up on and over the grinder in a nice tight position. i think my grinder may be mounted a little too far back as i have to lean in and over the grinder. i may try remounting is closer to the edge so i get get tight and look right down on it. i think this would help. also i must mention that stan has been gracious enough to let me pester him for a while this weekend. im looking forward to it!
