I tried out some new gear today... An Ontario TAK1 D2 with OnScene Tactical Kydex sheath and a Swedish "Light my Fire" Scout firesteel.
I've never tried using a ferrocerium rod before. I was a little doubtful about getting a fire going with it, even under ideal conditions. I found a piece of dry birchbark on the ground and used my knife to scrape/shave it into little bits and curls. After a few preliminary scrapes of the firesteel to remove some of the coating, I directed the sparks at the birchbark tinder. It lit up on the second shower of sparks. I was quite pleased, and my doubts were erased.
I had purchased the "Scout" and "Army" models of the firesteel. I was satisfied with the ease of using the ferrocerium rods to light a fire, so I now ordered five of the Doan's tools to stash in my various daypacks and backpacks.
The TAK1 was a great performer. I gave it somewhat of a workout, including some chopping on a very dry and hard piece of maple. The edge help up perfectly. The Kydex sheath was a huge improvement over the nylon one supplied with the knife. It is secure and safe, and it has the knife riding nice and high on my waist rather than hanging down along my leg.
I'm happy with my new stuff. I can hardly wait to camp out during archery season!
