First Fixed Blade for my Son

I think a Fallkniven WM1 would be a great choice for him - 3" blade / 7" OAL... Great size for a 10 y/o and a 10 y/o's hands... and when he gets bigger, he can use it as a backup or neck knife...

i'll point out i have a 3G one of those in my back pocket right now. +1 on it being a perfect fit for a 10yo.

it's a top blade and i'm hoping i'll leave mine to a descendant (fyi: kid count = zero @ 36). short of it being stolen, it'll last a lifetime.

if the fancy takes you: get a lam vg-10 blank and do a nice handle/sheath for it with him as a surprise birthday project if you really wanted to make it special.

make sure to add a lanyard.

IMO smaller knives like the izula are a folder replacements, unless he plans on leaving the folder at home I would go for a bigger blade.

IZULA do it, cuz he will have it forever even if it breaks he gets a new one free! :P

Get him the Izula, knifeworks.com sells it for like 40 bucks with the survival kit, and if I'm not mistaken, they do laser engraving too, which would elevate it to the "heirloom" status you're going for. I bought my RC-5 from there, and it rocks.

What would be his intended use? What's breaking the bank? (price limit)

The Izula rocks, but it's a tad small Mora clipper, Fallkniven F1 and perhaps an ESEE RC-4 would be more versatile.

Izula or Brusletto Baldur - both are knives I have seen given to responsible youngsters as their first fixed knife, and both are good bang for the buck values.

Becker Necker or the ESEE Izula would be excellent choices. Just don't get him some cheap "survival" knife from China.

And get him an American knife, not foreign.

I'm going to say an ESEE-3. Nice size, not too big, and the warranty.

Any knife you get a 10yr old is usually a cool knife either way. Maybe you could ask him what he likes instead of us.

My 11 year old loves using my Grohmann#3. I plan on getting him a #1 this summer.

My vote goes to the short version of the usmc Ka-Bar. 5" blade, so it's not too huge, and it has a nice small handle that would suit a younger person.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I just had what seems to be a great opportunity. Someone listed what appears to be a RAT Rowen made RC3 in new condition for $60 including shipping on ebay. It was listed as an Ontario Rat 3, but the picture shows Rowen on the blade. Doesn't that make it a RAT/ESEE? I realize it could be a scam, but his feedback selling other knives is good and I will fight through paypal if there is a problem. This was exactly the type knife I wanted to get, i just did not want to spend the money I thought I would have to to get a RC3. Anyway, wish me luck that there aren't any hidden problems. Here is the link to the listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/Ontario-Rat-3-k...tem&pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item3cafacd578

my thoughts go to a Buck 110. it was my first sheath knife 30 years ago, still have it, still going strong. --------- Eric

I would probably go with the Izula. Even if the website that you order from doesn't do engravings, there are plenty of places around that do that.
A black or green coated Izula with your son's initials engraved into it would make a great gift.
Also, Grohmann knives are great, too. I would recommend the number 1. It's their original design, has a great elliptical shape, very ergonomic, is available in stainless and carbon (their stainless is not too bad, either. I have the number 1 in both carbon and stainless), and has a blade length of 4 inches and an overall length around 8 inches. Maybe you could even get that knife in the kit, and it may be a fun project for you two to finish the rosewood handles and attach them to the knife. The actual blade comes finished with the kit, so you don't have to do the heat treat or any of that sort of thing.
Good luck!
