First fixed blade knife help?

Becker BK2 or one of the Becker shorts/tweeners, like the BK16

The Ka-Bar Beckers can't be beat for what your looking to spend. They will push you into the low $60 range but are WELL WORTH the asking price. Scrap the Gerbers.

The previous Buck suggestions would also be great options for you.

For a knife in the $60-$70 range you can't beat the Becker BK2, I know it's over your price point but if you want a survival knife this is it. You can chop and baton with this knife all day long, and still use it to prepare dinner that evening. All kidding aside with it's 1/4" thick blade and full tang this is one tough knife that will help you survive most situations. Check it out.

I would look at the Condor Brushlore with the wooden handles. For 30 bucks its a steal of a deal and just as good as the Beckers if you get the micarta version which does bump the price up to around 50 bucks.

Since it hasn't been suggested yet, I'd recommend the SOG Seal Pup Elite. I've had one for a couple years, and while I haven't put it through anything more rigorous than typical camping/hiking use, I've never been disappointed. I believe it's AUS8 steel, so not as rugged as a Kabar, but easier to put a quick edge on if you take a stone with you. $50 on amazon.

I did look into the Seal Pup Elite, but I heard it was more of a tactical knife than survival knife. Is that true?

I looked at the Prodigy, but I couldn't find a fine edge version.

Just saw the slightly cheesy but essentially the same "Bear Grylls' Ultimate survival knife, now with the fine edge. It comes with a couple handy do dads like a ferrocium rod and whistle, all under 60.00. I would've popped for one, but I have the LMF already, which is basically the BG on Steroids. But, I do ike the BG knife handle for comfort.

I'm not sure what defines the difference between the two. The blade shape looks fairly aggressive, though, so I can see why you'd say that. I've always heard the best recipe for a survival knife was a light, full tang, straight edged blade somewhere between 4 and 6 inches in length. The back end of the blade is also ridged for notching - hasn't made any difference to me so far, but seems like it might be useful.

Get a swamp rat :) To be honest get something good that you will not want to replace very quickly if money is tight. Buy once cry later!

I second the K-Bar Becker Tweeners. I'm partial to the BK16.
Though, if you want bigger, I think the BK-2 at the same money is an incredible deal.

Hello, I have been looking to get a fixed blade knife for general survival. I have had a few small cheap pocket knives and multi- tools, and I want to experience a bigger blade. I want a sturdy, full tang, non serrated knife with a sheath that can mount to a wider sized belt. My budget is around 50 bucks. I found some knives I liked such as the Gerber BG Ultimate knife, but it doesn't have a big belt loop. Any ideas? Thanks!

Take a look at the Kabar War Sword. For $50 it is a lot of knife and it comes with a great sheath. Probably the most knife in that price range. It's also a bigger knife so you can do more than just whittle or make shavings with it.

Lol this made me laugh. You make it sound like any knife smaller than the Ka Bar War Sword can only whittle and make shavings...which I assume you were not implying but it made me chuckle regardless.

:D:D I was hoping someone would notice that. :D:thumbup:

also, just looked it up the war sword has been discontinued.

A few more options for you. For just under $50, you can get a Ka Bar Mark 1 Navy Knife. I little better, for just over $55, is a SOG NW Ranger, but it doesn't have the best sheath around. People love it as a general camp knife. For a $50 hunting knife that can be put to use around a camp, I'd go with the Buck Vanguard with rubber handle.

Lot's of fixed blade knives out there for around $50.00. Some are good, a few are really good and others not so good. I would recommend the KA-BAR Heavy Bowie. You can get it on Amazon for $54.00. It's 1085 carbon steel which is a tough steel that is pretty easy to sharpen. Has a 9" blade, full tang and 1/4" thick. Has a flat grind, good if you want to baton wood. Kraton handle, which is very grippy. It has really good balance. It is a big knife, at over 14" in total length. This thing will serve you well. I have a few videos of low cost knife reviews @ www.youtube/equip4survival.com although I have not reviewed this knife as of now.

I have the original Buck Nighthawk - a great knife with the cordura sheath which has an exceptionally wide belt loop.

May be able to find that knife on one of the auction sites for less than $50.00.
