First Fixed Blade - Questions

Alright, thanks for all the help guys :)

I think I'm leaning towards the ESEE 6, though I have to admit that both the BK2 and 7 are attractive options. I will try and get a folding saw also.

Many thanks,

Blint

The Becker bk2 would be comparable to the esee5, the bk7 is comparable to the esee6. You can't go wrong with either company, their performance will be pretty even.

For a folding saw, check out the bahco laplander. It's under $40 and highly regarded by many.

What are you going to use for a small blade?

If this is for backpacking and not so much heavy camp/survival type use then you should go lighter.

Maybe something like BHK or Bark River bushcrafter paired with a Vic Hiker. The small tough knife can baton up small logs for kindling and the Hiker has a saw.

It's a very personal opinion, but if u are going to bring an axe or folding saw, the ESEE 6 is just unnecessary weight.
Go smaller. A 4" fixed blade will be more than enough.
And don't worry, any of those knives will handle ur tasks for the years to come.

I'm not knocking the ESEE knife, but for that price in the UK you could buy a Gransfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet (or a Small Forest Axe), a nice little scandi knife (Helle, Brusletto, Kellam etc..), a good folding saw and a small SAK.

You could fully kit yourself out with the above and then buy the survival knife at a later date.

For that kind of budget, you can get a nice BK2 for yourself and one for each of your three or four closest friends. Your great grandchildren will thank you when you pass these knives down to them.

BK2 all the way...
