I want to attempt a folder and I would like to get an idea of of the more simple to construct locking mechanisms (excluding friction folder). Maybe a better to put it would be a more forgiving lock style.

Thanks,

Gary

made an ugly frame lock back in the day then covered the ugly parts till i got better with scales so i made liner locke
my EDC is a nice clean framelock
the tactical framelock is a fantastic book to learn from tho not cheap these days

I've only made a few knives, and most of them liner locks, so take that for what you will. I'd say definitely go with frame or liner lock, since all you really need in addition to regular knifemaking tools are a halfway decent drill press (which you should already have to make fixed blades) and maybe a surface plate. They're also somewhat "forgiving" in that you can oversize the lock face and grind to fit, and with the screw construction, you can always take it apart to tweak things.
