I just attempted my first coffee can forge for heatreating 01. Can anyone help me with what I am doing?

Link if the photo doesn't show up

Thanks in advance

Two things,
You might want to find a better link than that one. The photos below the forge are a little OT.

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, you have just put the Kao-wool in the can bare?
It should be stabilized and coated with satanite. There should be NO exposed fibers. They will eat up your lungs just like asbestos!

Read up on forge building if this is the case before lighting that forge again.

The kao-wool has ITC-100 over it. I did that yesterday and lit it today. And sorry for that stupid link. I hosted somewhere else

From the picture looks like the burner needs to be at more of a tangent, from what I can see it looks like the flame is just hitting the wall and not swirling like it should be.

OK, not so much a problem, but you might still want to coat it with 1/4" of satanite and then a light coat of ITC-100.It will be much smoother inside that way.

The burner should,as Will pointed out, be facing at an angle,so the flame swirls around the forge and moves forward.About 15 degrees forward and at a tangent so it aligns with the inside lining.

How did it work when you fired it up?

My first thought after looking at the photo is what are your using for a burner. If its what I think it is I'd say you also need a larger burner or step down to the one brick forge.

Yeah its just a small off brand burner. I will probably get a benzomatic soon. When I first lit it I put the burner at the best angle I could but I think the un eveness of the lining + the ITC was preventing an even burn. So I guess ill order some more kao wool satanite and get a better burner and try again next weekend. Thanks for all your help

A Bernzomatic JTH-7 will be more than hot enough. You can get them at Lowes, Walmart, and other hardware stores.

The JTH-7 is a swirl flame burner, and has a 3 foot hose. They run about $30 new.

It won't work. It will work with a one brick forge.

I agree with Raymond. I don't think they have enough BTU output to run anything but a very small chamber forge. The photo may be misleading, but if the chamber is more than 2 inches, it needs a real forge burner ( which costs less than $30 to build, anyway).A super simple venturi burner can be made from $5-10 in plumbing fittings.
