First Forged Knife!

that looks great, hard to believe it's your first try, clean lines, nice texture, can't wait to see how it cuts and uses for JDS1, nice job, John!

The one I'm working on now is similar to a Green River, should be done this weekend. This one will be for sale.

If a person wanted to have their contest entry made as a forged knife, what would you say to that?

Jeff

The buffalo skinner!
Congrats John and to Jeff also.

I can't wait to get my first hammered JK.

Looks even better in person! Thanks again John, I'm honored to have #1.

Nice .

I thought about your forging yesterday. I was out for a walk with the Mrs. and found a couple RR spikes near an old, unused spur.

This may be info that John can use, which is why I am posting it here instead of a PM.

Most older rail spikes sat around .3-.4 carbon, though some were higher, they are not common.

While they can make a decent letter opener, and Possibly an axe/hatchet head they are not idea for knives since most will only harden to a Max of 50ish.
Because of that, I don't even think you would have to temper them.
-------
Tldr, make a show piece, letter opener, throwing knife or something where low hardness isn't a deal breaker.

Thanks Bill. I've seen a few knives made from them with twisted handles and such. Never put much thought into it as they all look heavy and uncomfortable. I didn't know the details behind them but I learned something today

I won't be forging anything for at least three weeks. Connie is going to be working 10pm to 6am the next several weeks, so no hammering during the day when she is sleeping.

John,
I think that you really should supply a card like the one you gave Daniel with EVERY KNIFE!

I would suggest several facts be put on them as follows:

Date of manufacture (4/2/2027)
Name of knife model, if any (Rule #9 XXL)
Type steel used (1/8 O1)
Stock removal or forged? (Stock removal)
Handle material (reclaimed maple flooring)
Extras (jimping, mosaic pins)
Signature (John A. Kxxxxxxxx

I would gladly pay a reasonable fee for you to supply cards for the JK knives I already have, and believe that others would too! A catchy, colorful logo pre-printed on the cards would be a nice touch. The corporate seal stamp is a great idea to prevent forgery.

I would like to hear what you other JK customers think of this?

I agree completely; it's a great personal touch. These are heirloom quality knives and the providence would make a really nice addition to the package.

There is no way all that would fit on the back of a standard business card (which this was).
