Everyone seems to used only stock removal knives around here, so I figured it would fun to try and forge a knife. I did this at a forge in MA. This is my first attempt at forging turned out ok. The handle is a little short, but fairly comfortable. The overall concept behind it is pretty easy to do, but its difficult to get smooth lines and edges. Its very different from making a stock removal knife. This one took me about 3 hours to complete as I was new to forging. It is differential tempered, but still needs to have an edge put on it so I can test it out.

Also Tony, if I get a chance this week I am going to try to forge some strikers for flint and steel this weekend if a get a chance. But I just started a new job so I can't make any promises.

what ya make it out of?? what kinda forge?

nice

andrew

Its made out of some type of spring steel from a car, can't remember the number on it.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by what kind of forge. We used coal as the fuel. I was really rushed in making it, so the guy teaching me didn't really have time to explain some of the basics.

Nice job! Thanks for taking the time to post your efforts! Don't feel like you need to make excuses (short on time :D ), everyone has a first effort, and you had the guts to post yours here. If you hadn't told me what it was, I would have still known it was a knife, so I would consider that a success. As long as you had fun, I would say that is the main thing (and I kinda dig the results, so there! :D )

Really cool Andrew!!!

Bring that knife, spring steel should be high carbon, you can use the back of it as a striker:thumbup:
