OK I forged a blade, ground it, and then melted it during HT. Hehe. Live and learn.

So I reforged another one. This one will be full tang instead of hidden.

Both were forged from a 1/2" diameter 01 rod.

It's just too much fun whacking the heck out of steel...

How did you melt it during heat treat?

I stuck it in the forge, and left it too long. (Charcoal forge)

Aparantly its hot in there.....

And yes, its a lot of fun. My neighbors probably think I'm nutz though.

The first blade I forged was in a coal forge, and I nearly melted it too. I learned to pay attention after the thing was white and shooting sparks out the end! I'd wager to say you aren't the only one who melted one! As a matter of fact, I seem to remember a certain person (not mentioning any names but he is now an ABS Mastersmith) in my Intro to Bladesmithing course that melted a big chunk out of one of his! ;) -Matt-

Thats good to know. Doesn't help with the regret though. Man that blade was looking good.

If you haven't left one in the fire while you were having a conversation, and burnt the $#*+ out of it, you're not a REAL MAN.

:p

Whew. I guess I make the cut then.....:p

I guess I'm a real man too. Actually more man than most based on the criteria in this thread. I melted a really promising damascus billet! I decided to do some shop cleaning while waiting for it to come up to temperature on it's fourth fold. I'm not very good at multi-tasking as it turns out. I nearly cried. It was a learning experience, so well worth one billet of nice steel.
