My girlfriend was mad keen to get me something for Fathers Day, and me being the PITA that I am to buy for (I can always wait for something) finally bit the bullet and ordered a GEC Broncho Charlie from Spaceport. I have been looking for a single blade, non stainless slipjoint for so long that I actually like that its pitted my teeth! :D

First impressions as I slid it out of the tube 'box' was uh-oh! this feels like its going to be too big to EDC, which is the only reason I bought it. I have EDC'd a C.V Canoe for about 4 years, but I always wanted a single blade damnit! :o

Anyway, F&F is lovely, the back spring as commonly noted was a built in child proof lock and the walk and talk are excellent. The OoB sharpness left a lot to be desired but a very satisfying 30 minutes later on the foam mat it shaves wonderfully.

Although its quite large, its also quite thin and it went straight into my pocket for a test drive to see if was in fact EDC-able. I'm happy to say that its unnoticable in the pocket and I hope to get a lot of use out of it in the future.

Pic is from Spaceport.

man i have totally been looking at that same pattern for a few months now. great knife there. you gotta give a bit more detailed review whenyou use it a bit. nice knife bro.

i recieved the two bladed version of that knife a few weeks ago as a very kind gift and also have fallen in love with it.

previously i had been carrying a stockman but i have been carrying this larger/heavier knife and haven't really been minding it.

loving the GEC fit and finish and monster backsprings.

one of the reasons i didn't feel comfortable using a case and a boker trapper was that the blades didn't feel like they opened very snugly...like they could close easily. no problem on the GEC. and the halfstops on mine are nice. does that version have a half stop?

All GEC's have half stops, which makes caution the word with the tough backspring Pioneer models. They also have it with a liner lock. Then they have a little smaller model (Scout at 3 3/4") with and without linerlock.

I can't believe there's anyone on the traditional forum who doesn't have at least one GEC. If you want a knife for hard use, you're missing the boat !

Thanks guys, I will try and get some 'whitlin time in today, and I will give some more impressions.

That's a beaut!

I just got my first GEC about a month ago. I bought a Northfield #53 Muskrat. I hope it is only the first of many since they are so very well made!

I've got several GEC knives, and I've been very happy with all of them. Only one wasn't sharp out of the box.

Still need to get a two-blade #23 pattern, though.

I have two Scouts & I love them! One is stag w/o a shield & no lock, one is "river bone" w.lock that I've basically been beating the crap out of (blade totally patina'd, I dremelled the nail-nick to be larger, just heresy all 'round). Super knives. Previosuly I spent almost as much on a Fightin' Bull knife off the Bay, that was absolute crap and that briefly turned me off slippies. But GEC = mighty fine stuff!

Oh man, those things are beautiful! I've been looking at Great Eastern for a while- they look amazing. I finally broke down and ordered: "Great Eastern Cutlery--Tidoute #73 Scout--River Valley Green Jigged Bone--1095 Carbon Steel"

I can't wait!

I LIKE them!

I want to get hold of one of their No.25 Barlows.Anybody have one and if so what's your impression?

Greetings.W

The pictures of the beautiful GEC knives and comments about them have made me want a slipjoint for the first time in 20 years.

Just what I needed... more knives to lust after.

I've been looking at them for some time, but waiting for more scouts to come out in celluloid (a celluloid barlow would be awesome). Are the only places to get these things GEC and Cumberland?

Update: Well, I spent a considerable time testing (GF calls it playing, meh Tomato, TomAto) :)

The edge held up very well and as the taper on these is so gradual it takes to a convex like a duck to water. The blade length is incredibly useful, a lot more than you would think of a pocket knife of this lenght, this was another potential issue I thought I would have with it. The handle is very comfortable and fits well, this was my only gripe about the Canoe which would be uncomfortable to use for a long time if you were whitiling waiting for someone, who say, might be 'shopping' for stuff they really 'need' and you end up waiting about an hour ;) (Ring any bells?)

Bottom line: Good

I would probably sell a kidney for a single blade scout in Bocote though! Argh! the madness, its begun! Its Begun! Muwahaahaaaaaa!!~

GEC has a list of online distrubutors on their site:

CollectorKnives.net
Cumberland Knife Works
JRE Industries
KnivesShipFree.com
Pocket Knife World
Red Hill Cutlery
River Raisin Knife Co.
Spaceport Cutlery
TSA Knives, LLC

I think there are a few more, but that's their list.
