I just bought my first GEC. A #42 Missouri Trader with stag. Just waiting on it to be delivered. I'm pretty excited. I will post pictures of it as soon as i get it. Does anybody have any first/new GEC rituals they'd like to share?

try not to drool on it to much....carbon steel ya know :)

man I need more GEC's.

Rituals? Pop the tube, unwrap it, wipe off the factory oil, get out a piece of paper and see if the blades are sharp enough for you. If not, put an edge on it that you like. Then stick in your pocket, and start carrying it!

My ritual? I wipe off the oil, and open and close it a bunch. I will normally wash the blade off. If the action feels a bit gritty, I will clean it out. I look at it, and I pull it out of my pocket to stare.

Then I usually cut some fruit, etc.

With stag, I rub the stag with my thumb, like a worry stone.

@jc57 That's what I plan on. Its kind of a welcome home gift for myself. I'll be goin home for the first time in over a year.

Well, welcome home! Nothing like a new knife in the pocket. Marines, eh? Back from deployment?

Congrats on your first GEC. I received my first at the beginning of this month. Now I have 4 with 3 more due to get here Monday or Tuesday. 2 are stag and they are gorgeous. You're going to love the look and feel. Great knives, IMHO.

They are addictive. Enjoy! :)

Congrats on the purchase! The first thing I do with any knife is to liberally oil the joints and work the blades until the black gunk stops coming out. Then I sharpen if needed and perform the ritual fruit sacrifice.:D

I know it's considered one of the great heresies, by some, but I like to force a patina on my GEC knives, that I plan to use, I have trouble keeping rust off of them if I don't Usually I use a vinegar patina. Then I put a satisfactory edge on it.

Congrats man... My first GEC was a #42 Trader w/ Copperhead jigged bone. I got a few more since, some with exotic wood and some with stag. They are all excellent knives and my biggest problem is deciding which to carry... my latest acquisition is on its way--a #23 Pioneer w/ ebony and liner lock. That one will soon displace my #42 trapper w/ cocobolo. How sad. Well, not really. ;) You are going to love that Trader--the clip point is among my favorites, it sharpens up like a razor, and it will very likely be incredibly well done in terms of fit and finish. I like cutting an apple or two once I get the edge I want on it... it starts the patina process off nice and natural. Enjoy, and welcome back.

There are few things more exciting than a new GEC arriving in the mail!

I pop the tube, unwrap it, admire it a bunch and then wipe off the excess oil. Then into the pocket it goes!

Mine are all users so I don't get them to collect. The #55 and #06 Pemberton are my constant companions as far as pocket carry. My Charlow resides in the little watch pocket of my 50's style motorcycle jacket.

Post pics when you get it :)

Welcome back Texasboy. Boy did you come back at a bad time--sure is hot right now. You made a great choice with GEC knife. I have a few and all have been received in great condition. If you get a chance to come to Canton some time let me know. I would like to shake your hand and say thanks.

Ya mean like practicin' the secret handshake while standing on one leg facing Titusville like the instructions say?

Nope. No rituals at all.

I really like the size of the #42 Missouri Trader/Trapper. Been thinking about getting a stag #42 Trapper (2-blade). My #42 Trapper is what I carry now. I would suggest you consider one of KSF's leather pocket sheaths (large). The cost has been keeping me from ordering one quite frankly.

I got my first gec a few days ago. It's a single blade sheep foot Barlow with ivory bone. I love it, but it had almost no edge. I've been trying to get a decent one on it since it arrived.

My ritual..open the tube , unwrap the knife and stare at it for a short time 1-2 hrs and fondle it for another 2-3 hrs, open and close it a few times, check the sharpness of the blade, look for defects (a old habit I cant kick) and from there enjoy!
