Just got my very first GEC in the mail yesterday and I can say i absolutely love this knife! Feels solid as a rock in my hand. I love my Case knives but this knife just has a different feel to it. I'm thoroughly impressed with GEC. Now my only problem is I'm scared to use it! How ridiculous is that... lol

Here are a couple pics. Its a Beaver Tail #42 Missouri trapper. Carbon blades...

If you own a beaver tail feel free to post em up!

I've got two Beaver Tails, a single blade 73 and a 42 two blade. Both are great knives. Get a little patina on it and you won't look back.

I do like that 73 pattern and that one is very good looking. Congrats!

That a beautiful knife, congratulations!

I need to get this variation, looks like a 73 but that Missouri Trapper is a neat variant. Are both blades exactly the same?

In that pic it looks like they are but in fact there is a clip and spey. The spey is the one labeled 10 of 25 in the 2nd pic.

I'm not real familiar with GEC and have been wondering if this knife is meant to be more of a collectors item instead of a user. I would hate to put it to work and later down the road regret it. I'm guessing if only 25 were made that its meant to be more of a collectors knife?

practically all GECs are short runs of 25 or so knives, so if all GECs are limited editions, then none of them are limited editions, if you know what I mean - I don't think their aftermarket value increases just because of the short runs. I use my GECs, and with the patina it makes them look even cooler. My ebony 73# has probably reached the status of beater knife even,

They are fantastic users!

Buy one, in what ever pattern suits you, and use it in good health. You won't be sorry.

This 73 was my first GEC, and I hesitated to use it, for a couple days anyway. I think it looks better and better the more I use it, and the patina shows that it's truly mine.

Congratz on that #42 ... nice looking knife.

I also own a Beaver Tail, though it´s a #73

Don´t worry about using it... here´s my #73 with a sausage salad

An older pic, but the knife is a great user.

Kind regards
Andi

Thanks for all the help and information. I'm putting her in my EDC rotation starting today:D I will come back and post pics in a month or so of the patina progression.

Oh yea, great looking knives too!

I've got that same one. Going to go through all of the junk from my truck this afternoon in the driveway. Two great contractor bags full, windshield glass and all.

More often than not, GEC will make more than 25 of a particular pattern. They only serialize the first 25 knives in the run. The rest are unserialized. So basically, your knife is serial number 10 of 25 serialized knives.

Having said that, I have seen GEC mark some of their knives with "1 of 25" but then when the production totals come out we find that they only made 22 or even 15. GEC usually doesn't post production totals for a given year until sometime the following year so we usually don't know, at the time of release, how many were actually made.

Either way, great score! Looking good!

First off, welcome to BF and congrats on the new knife! The secondary blade on the #42 actually appears to be a drop point, not a spey. Here's a better look at a spey blade on a #73. It has a drop point as the master blade.

As far as use goes, the great thing about GEC knives is that they are designed to be used and at the same time they're nice enough to collect if desired. Don't feel bad about using it if that's what you bought it for. Heck, I use a #56 that was part of a short run of only 7.

As pointed out by dannyP above, your knife has a drop point secondary blade and what GEC calls a muskrat clip blade primary. You can tell at a glance by "decoding" the GEC model number of 428212. The 42 is the pattern model number, followed by the 8 which in GEC nomenclature indicates a muskrat clip, then the 2 indicates it has two blades. The 12 at the end indicates it was made in 2012. Enjoy your new knife.
