First gun...please help!

The Luger is a collector's item. The S&W may be, depending on its age.

The 8" barrel indicates a large frame revolver. It is most likely a Model 27, or an earlier variation from before the model numbers were assigned.

A pre-WWII Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum is every bit as collectible as a Luger and even more rare.

It really all depends on what you're planning to do with the firearms. If you are planning to learn how to shoot, neither is a good choice. Follow the advice in previous posts on whicg guns to consider, and especially regarding training; if nothing else, a basic course. Ask your local gun store or contact the NRA on this.

The luger has a finicky mechanism, and is very susceptible to outside dirt getting in. So it should not be your choice as a shooter. On the other hand, it's value as a collectible far exceeds that of the S & W. Go for that one, tuck it away, and get a working gun to learn on. Revolvers are generally more foolproof than automatics, by the way. Also, find a local gun store/shooting range where you can not only finger but actually shoot some of the guns you are interested in. You will find vast differences, and that way can determine which suits you the best.
