So first post here guys go easy on me!!
So my name is Sebastian and i am a chef by trade, but have a deep passion for traditional Japanese knives. I would love to one day make knives, but that obviously is a lot more work than making handles, so i figured i would start simple.
The wood i used was from the local Mangroves, since the wood lives in and around salt water, i think it will stand the test of time for a good while. Just to be safe, i did seal and oil the wood. The colors are something Ive never seen in wood, its mainly grey all over, but in areas it pops in amazing purple shades. Wood was in great condition, didn't have to fill anything in. I made it to resemble a D shaped handle, but a bit more pronounced because i will be mounting this on a deba so i want something a little chunkier.
I literally carved this thing from raw wood with just a bread knife and various grits of sand paper, start to finish took roughly 4-5 hours. I will definitely be doing this again and trying to get the craft down because it truly does interest me. I would love to hear your guys' opinions on it. I can take criticism.
Best part about this all, there's a ton of this wood sitting at work that i can take so im gonna stock up for the future!
I do plan on purchasing a bench sander and a drill press to try to play with this more.
