So first post here guys go easy on me!!

So my name is Sebastian and i am a chef by trade, but have a deep passion for traditional Japanese knives. I would love to one day make knives, but that obviously is a lot more work than making handles, so i figured i would start simple.

The wood i used was from the local Mangroves, since the wood lives in and around salt water, i think it will stand the test of time for a good while. Just to be safe, i did seal and oil the wood. The colors are something Ive never seen in wood, its mainly grey all over, but in areas it pops in amazing purple shades. Wood was in great condition, didn't have to fill anything in. I made it to resemble a D shaped handle, but a bit more pronounced because i will be mounting this on a deba so i want something a little chunkier.

I literally carved this thing from raw wood with just a bread knife and various grits of sand paper, start to finish took roughly 4-5 hours. I will definitely be doing this again and trying to get the craft down because it truly does interest me. I would love to hear your guys' opinions on it. I can take criticism.
Best part about this all, there's a ton of this wood sitting at work that i can take so im gonna stock up for the future!

I do plan on purchasing a bench sander and a drill press to try to play with this more.

Thats a crazy wood! try a coping saw and make some 2 piece scales. Less traditional but in my eyes far more effective.

I respectfully disagree, I like it the way it is and personaly would make it a hidden tang.
(stick the tang in the wood as it is)

I like hidden tangs so i will do that. Ill try scales one day though for sure. Gonna make the guys some custom handle fish spatulas!

Very nice! How dry was the wood before you started working?

When you get a sander you will be surprised how well it works for shaping the wood.
Looks like you had fun with a wild looking piece of wood.
Be sure to post some photos when you get it mounted on the deba.

Im excited! Ive done a lot of sanding in my life time, so doing it by hand isn't the worst thing in the world, plus it will give me a better respect for the craft once i do get all of the tools i plan on getting.

I had loads of fun, so much that im starting another handle as we speak!
