First handmade knife. Tips, criticism and anything else.

This is purely personal preference but I like the G-10 on the guard, it looks very comfortable.

I agree and might be so bold to suggest I like it better than the look of that posters knife. Not meant to be a put down at all, just a preference. Also, I agree that wearing eye and lung protection is smart even without power tools.

Nice first knife.

Nice job indeed. Nothing wrong with leaving the material on the guard at all. If you have not seen it yet Nick Wheeler has fantastic video tutorial thread in this subforum for hand sanding. I watched it several times and it explains a ton.

looks like a perfectly good user. as mentioned before take the grind up a bit higher. as I will slice much much better.

I have looked at some knifes that hasn't material on the quard, and compared to some that has.
And I think I will just stick to put some material on the quard.

It's depends also on the type of knife I think.

@crank, thank! I have yet to put the knife to use, so dont know how it will perform. Yes on the next knife I will make the grind higher (and thinner).

Eric, I could be way off, but I've noticed that some people that really like the fiber liners seem to also be those that have been using them, and making knives, longer than g10 liner material has been available. In any case, I mentioned CA as a sealant because of its low viscosity. Seems to seep into the stuff easily. I'm only using it because I happen to have a few sheets that I bought before I ever saw g10 as a handle material. My plan is to seal it, then cut/drill holes in it before epoxying to the tang. That way there is still some contact area between scale material and steel.

Next time I buy materials, I'll buy g10. Just throwing the vulcanized fiber stuff out there as an option for someone on an extreme budget. :)

To the op... I have knives where the g10 is on the guard, and some where it isn't. Don't take one example (the knife in the pic) as an only example. It looks right, or wrong, depending on the knife. I happen to like the way it is on your knife.
